• Lack of educational resources promoting
digital trade within Europe and internationally
(Boucher et al, 2015)
• Universities are slow to produce programs for
practical skills enabling the digital economy
(Mowery et. al., 2015)

• Reduce growing digital skills gap and increase
awareness of the European context to digital marketing
• Deliverables: textbook, a massive open online course (MOOC)
and a joint masters course
• Partnership:5 universities + 2 commercial partners; across 5
countries (UK, Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria and Greece)

Making a Digital and Social Media Marketing MOOC: Lessons for university-industry interaction

  1. The project has several deliverables including a textbook, a massive open online course (MOOC) and a joint masters course. The aim of the current paper is to evaluate the experiences of creating a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) that was undertaken by the JEMSS project from September 2015 to December 2015. This MOOC included live industry case studies from Bulgaria, Lithuania, Greece and the UK as well as academic introductions and guidance included throughout the course content.
  2. The project has several deliverables including a textbook, a massive open online course (MOOC) and a joint masters course. The aim of the current paper is to evaluate the experiences of creating a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) that was undertaken by the JEMSS project from September 2015 to December 2015. This MOOC included live industry case studies from Bulgaria, Lithuania, Greece and the UK as well as academic introductions and guidance included throughout the course content.
  3. The MOOC was delivered through a partnership with iversity, a commercial platform based in Germany. This partnership assisted the rapid development of the MOOC’s content and enabled the academic team to avoid major pitfalls that can be experienced in delivery through an online platform. This aspect of the collaboration has also generated the trust necessary to plan the future delivery of a full masters degree through the platform. The platform enable participants to feedback comments and questions. In addition additional social media platform were enabled to allow a range of different communications with learners. The delivery of the MOOC was also coordinated with the use of a learner collaboration app offered by Smoocer. The aim of using the range of feedback tools was to initiate a robust action learning cycle that would thoroughly test the MOOC, its contents and its relevance to a European context.
