What are the main elements of a magazine cover?
The main elements of a magazine cover includes text, the main image and colour.
The text needs to be chosen to fit in well with the overall outcome of the magazine. For example, for Vogue, a serif type of font is used to add a sense of style to the
magazine, which reflects the genre of the magazine; Style, Fashion and Beauty.
Furthermore, the main image also needs to be chosen to fit in well with the magazine and allows the reader to know the genre of the magazine. The main image is
also used to denote as well as to connote additional meanings. For example, for Vogue, a successful female model is usually used to represent fashion and beauty as
well as success and popularity. However, if there was a politician on the front cover of a magazine, the genre of the magazine would most likely be political.
Another main element of a magazine is the colour scheme. The colour scheme can be chosen to just blend in well with the overall look of the magazine like the main
image or the colour can be chosen to connote additional meanings onto the magazine. For example, red could represent anger or passion etc.
What different text elements will we have?
The different text elements include the masthead, the main cover line, the other cover lines and the dateline.
The masthead is the name of the brand of the magazine. The main cover line is the text that accompanies the main image and further explains more about the main
feature of the magazine, and gives the reader more of an idea of what the magazine is about. The main cover line is the second biggest font on the magazine, after the
masthead. The dateline gives the reader information about the magazine including the date, price and the issue number.
What additional elements can we find?
The additional elements on a magazine include the barcode, skyline or header and strapline.
The barcode is a functional element, which allows the item to be scanned in shops. The skyline or header is usually used to offer information about additional content
or is used as a unique selling point, and is placed at the top of the magazine. However, a strapline appears at the bottom of a magazine and gives additional
information about the brand or company.
How should you plan the colour of your text in the magazine cover?
You should plan the colour of the text by sticking to a colour scheme. For example, you could try matching the colour of the text with the colours shown in the main
image. The colour scheme can be chosen to just blend in well with the overall look of the magazine like the main image or the colour can be chosen to connote
additional meanings onto the magazine. For example, red could represent anger or passion etc.
How many colours should you use in your cover lines?
There should be two main colours in the image + black or white.
9. Task 1. Plan: Initial ideas

through the rain (difficult times) to get to the rainbow (happiness).

Codes and conventions of current affairs magazines. What are the codes and conventions of this genre? What is your target audience? How are you going to use those codes and conventions to
appeal to your target audience's interests and fulfil their expectations?
My target audience: A socially conscious, 16-25, middle to upmarket audience
Genre: Current affairs and news, health (which reflects the masthead, “Minds”).
Conventions:
• Masthead, biggest font, at the top; audience’s attention.
• Main image in the centre and big; audience’s attention. Main image is a picture of an unknown person, so the focus is more on the situation/issue, rather than the person.
• Smaller additional images around the main image on the sides, accompanying the additional cover lines.
Codes:
• Colour scheme matching with font and image, and background etc.
• Colour scheme Magazine 1: Grey and Blue, Black and White. To convey sadness and misery.
• Colour scheme Magazine 2: Dependent on the images.
• Clothes, makeup and props: simple clothes and makeup, so that the reader can focus more on the issue/situation, rather than fashion etc.
Props may include: masks and gloves, hand sanitizers, soaps etc because this all relates to the issue of Covid-19, which would attract the reader as this would illustrate the problems that people are
concerned about, regarding the issue of coronavirus. As well as this, a phone to reflect how communication is so important at a time like this.
• Background: Blend with colour scheme or contrast? I will probably choose to blend in with the colour scheme.
Task 1. Plan: Initial ideas
