1. Magazine pitch research
There are a huge amount of publishers who publish magazines in the
UK, although Bauer Media, Hearst magazines and Time Inc. UK
(formerly known as IPC Media) are among the largest. EMAP Consumer
Publishing used to publish a magazine called ‘Smash Hits Magazine’,
which was launched in 1978 and was published for almost 30 years,
until the magazine closed in 2006.
Despite the magazine’s huge success throughout the 80’s and 90’s, the
arrival of the internet, and the ease of access to free online celebrity
pop content saw the magazine drop out of circulation due to the
decline in sales.
As one of the UK’s largest magazine publishers, Bauer Media, who now
own EMAP’s Consumer Publishing division, would be the perfect
publisher for me to pitch my magazine to. Since the closure of Smash
Hits Magazine a large gap in the market has existed which has not been
filled. This presents a fantastic opportunity for my magazine to be
launched into this gap in the market to provide today’s teenagers with
the product they need.
