M6.2 Blue Rodeo, and their lack of social media presence!
1.
2. A country rock band from
Toronto, Ontario
Formed in 1984
13 Studio Albums
3 Live Albums
1 Vol of Greatest Hits
The band members have
multiple solo albums and
side projects
3. Unabashedly Canadian the
band appreciates and shows its
roots even as far as selling
band member hockey jerseys
at concerts
Lead singers/songwriters Jim
Cuddy and Greg Keelor met in
high school and have played
together since 1977
Their first album sold
(Outskirts) sold 200K+ albums
making it double platinum in
Canada
Following album Diamond Mine
won the band their first Juno
Award
6. Facebook
Barebones and posts shared with
Twitter
Posts comments about past and
upcoming concerts
Links to articles about their shows
Posts great pictures from recent
concerts, this specific one from
Massey Hall in February
7. Twitter
Again very barebones like
Facebook
Some interaction with fans,
definitely not the actual
musicians and a social media
relations employee
Links to photos on their
Facebook page
Comments about band and
concert news
8. YouTube
Great videos of live and seemingly
candid performances
Best use of social media
Videos from past hits available
without dealing with terrible services
like Vevo
Ads were not intrusive and didn’t
make me wait to watch/listen to a
song
9. Their own website
has good info,
aesthetically pleasing
and allows you to
listen to their songs
Seems to be their go
to place for social
media interaction
and their main focus
10. Find Your Audience: Blue Rodeo knows exactly who is coming to their
shows, and these people are 40+ years old and don’t care about social
media or streaming sites… and it shows. They cater to their audience and
do all they need to.
11. Meaningful Sharable Content:
To Blue Rodeo fans they are
posting all they need to. Fans don’t
need much and the extra videos on
YouTube and the photos of the
concerts are perfect added
bonuses to the enjoyment of the
events
Concerts are extremely
entertaining and a light hearted
night, remembering the night in
pictures is all most blue rodeo fans
want
12. Fan Engagement: Not much is done here on the social media front. They do
comment on fans who post on their Twitter but not much. Don’t seem to offer free
swag or anything like that. Their YouTube page is fantastic for behind the scenes
looks at the band and their songs. Very well made videos that seem out of a
professionally done documentary.
13. IRL Social Push:
The band advertises on
classic rock radio stations,
but again doesn’t really
need to hand out flyers or
worry about online
marketing. They have a fan
base and they aren’t trying
to get a younger audience.
Their emailing list is
effective in giving out new
tour dates, perhaps more
tour advertising could help
but they sell out most shows
anyways.
14. Consistent Audience Engagement:
The band is all about the
concerts and events. They
talk to the audience and
ensure that the night will be
enjoyable. They are clearly
an old school band and
know their roots. They cater
to their famous songs and
ensure the audience is
singing at the top of their
lungs at the end of the
concert.
15. Blue Rodeo is clearly an
older band without much
online/social media
presence. I have attended
concerts of bands that are
very social media heavy
(Black Keys), and not many
concerts can compare to
Blue Rodeo. They give you
a fantastic night time and
time again, and make the
older audience remember
the times they first heard
the music.
