Natural ventilation utilizes stack effect and wind pressure to supply outdoor air into buildings for ventilation and cooling without fans or mechanical systems. It reduces energy consumption for air conditioning. Key concepts include an airtight building envelope with operable windows and exhaust units located high with intakes low to facilitate airflow. Benefits include reduced costs and energy usage while providing thermal comfort, though effectiveness varies with outdoor conditions. Application requires considering factors like prevailing winds, vegetation, inlet/outlet placement and sizing.
Air conditioning units are major home appliances designed to control the temperature and humidity in your home. There are many Air Conditioner alternatives designed to meet your specific need. It is very important to know what type of AC you need to meet your need.
This document discusses doors and windows used in buildings. It covers the locations of doors and windows and how they should be placed to allow for ventilation and passage. It also defines various technical terms used for door and window components. Finally, it describes different types of doors and windows, including their sizes and constructions. The types of doors covered include paneled, glazed, flush, louvered, revolving, and collapsible doors. Window types include fixed, pivoted, double hung, sliding, casement, louvered, bay, dormer, gable and skylight windows.
The document discusses key factors to consider when designing music studio acoustics, including acoustic isolation, frequency balance, and reverberation. It emphasizes building walls, floors, and ceilings that are decoupled from one another using materials like gypsum boards, floating floors, dropped ceilings, and insulation to minimize sound transmission. This document discusses different types of ventilation systems for buildings. It describes natural ventilation systems like single-sided ventilation, cross ventilation, and the stack effect. Single-sided ventilation uses openings on one side of a building to ventilate a space with limited area. Cross ventilation achieves greater air flow by opening windows on different facades to allow air to flow through a room. The stack effect uses differences in air pressure and temperature to ventilate buildings.
The document discusses different air distribution and ventilation systems for indoor spaces. It describes conventional systems that have issues like cold air dumping and poor indoor air quality. It then introduces an alternative system called chilled beam ventilation that can cause condensation issues. The document focuses on a laminar displacement distribution system called Comfort Climate System (CCS) ceiling that provides draft-free, noiseless air conditioning with customizable aesthetic designs. CCS uses micro-perforated ceiling panels connected to an air handling unit to evenly distribute air without requiring chilled water. It has benefits like simple installation, maintenance and high ceilings compatibility.
Turbo ventilators and ridge ventilators are types of roof vents used to exhaust hot air, pollutants, and moisture from buildings and industrial sheds. Turbo ventilators use wind power for ventilation while ridge ventilators are installed at roof peaks and work with soffit vents to circulate air. Proper ventilation controls indoor air quality and temperature using factors like ventilation effectiveness. Common materials for these vents include stainless steel, aluminum, powder coated steel, and mild steel.

This thesis explores the transformation of the vacated (2023) IKEA store in Kållered, Sweden, into a "Reuse Hub" addressing various user types. The project aims to create a model for circular and sustainable economic practices that promote resource efficiency, waste reduction, and a shift in societal overconsumption patterns.
Reuse, though crucial in the circular economy, is one of the least studied areas. Most materials with reuse potential, especially in the construction sector, are recycled (downcycled), causing a greater loss of resources and energy. My project addresses barriers to reuse, such as difficult access to materials, storage, and logistics issues.
Aims:
• Enhancing Access to Reclaimed Materials: Creating a hub for reclaimed construction materials for both institutional and individual needs.
• Promoting Circular Economy: Showcasing the potential and variety of reusable materials and how they can drive a circular economy.
• Fostering Community Engagement: Developing spaces for social interaction around reuse-focused stores and workshops.
• Raising Awareness: Transforming a former consumerist symbol into a center for circular practices.
Highlights:
• The project emphasizes cross-sector collaboration with producers and wholesalers to repurpose surplus materials before they enter the recycling phase.
• This project can serve as a prototype for reusing many idle commercial buildings in different scales and sizes.
• The findings indicate that transforming large vacant properties can support sustainable practices and present an economically attractive business model with high social returns at the same time.
• It highlights the potential of how sustainable practices in the construction sector can drive societal change.
Lynden | VanAir Ventilated Architectural Door - Web Version 5.8.15
1. An aesthetic door that
provides ventilation,
thermal comfort and
sound privacy
OPEN YOUR FUTURE TO INNOVATION
2. Airflow Pathway
Air flows in from one side, through the
door core and out the opposing side
driven by pressure gradient.
Sound Privacy
Lab-tested baffling is incorporated into
the door core to attenuate sound as it
travels through the airflow pathway.
Innovative Resonators
Resonator constructions are integrated
into the door stile to attenuate sound
as it travels out of the airflow pathway.
Provide ventilation without
sacrificing aesthetics and
sound privacy
All VanAir doors feature:
3. Improve Air Quality and
Thermal Comfort
Provide cross-ventilation across enclosed
spaces to balance and alleviate temperature
and pressure build-up.
Sound Privacy
Integrated resonator constructions, acoustic
baffles and a tighter undercut provide the
sound privacy of a solid core door.
Design Flexibility
Create airflow pathways without the complexity of
modifying ceilings and walls to accept ducting, vents
and grilles. Save installation and material cost.
Avoid Unsightly Undercuts
Doors are undercut to provide airflow. Not only is the fitment
unsightly, it is a key factor of poor sound privacy. Even large
undercuts may not provide sufficient airflow.

An easy, effective and elegant
ventilation pathway
The VanAir door helps facilitate airflow with sound privacy
and aesthetics in mind. Airflow and sound privacy are key
components of a comfortable indoor environment. More
often than not, they are negatively correlated – the more
airflow, the higher the chance of sound penetration.
Modern buildings are designed with greater emphasis on
ventilation and balanced airflow movement from the supply
to exhaust. A balanced system is able to reduce the load on
the ventilation system and reduce leakage or infiltration
across the building envelope.
Holistically designed to improve Heating, Ventilation and
Air Conditioning (HVAC) performance and maintain sound
privacy, the flush ventilation slots outperform acoustically
baffled door/wall grilles. It is a cohesive, single-source
unit, engineered, tested and fabricated for full structural
integrity. With VanAir doors, there is no need to pierce the
door, or specify proud, surface-mounted aftermarket grilles
that may interfere with kick-plates or be a mismatch for
door hardware finishes and the surrounding design goal.
Down to the last detail
Modern ventilation demands require undercutting
doors. Not only is this a sound privacy issue, it creates an
unsightly, unfinished look. Floor transitions become more
apparent and light penetration can detract from occupant
comfort. VanAir doors by Lynden Door allow for consistent
3
/16 inch floor clearances.
Provide air quality, architectural fitment, aesthetics and
sound privacy with the VanAir door by Lynden Door.
