History
lubuntu 17.10 has been released! Lubuntu is a lightweight Linux flavor using Ubuntu and LXDE as its
base. The project’s goal is to provide a lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically
targets older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer hardware. Along with a
simple but usable graphical user interface, Lubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications chosen
for their small footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive. Where can I download
it? On the server with the following architectures: Download lubuntu amd64 (64-bit suitable for most
computers) Download lubuntu i386 (32-bit most PCs before 2007)
What is Lubuntu ?
Derivated of Ubuntu, using LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as desktop
environnement.
 Optimized for slow computers and limited hardware Graphical interfaces
Including support for most if users' needs for a desktop usage.
Works with
• 128 Mb of RAM
• 3Gb of disk
Why Lubuntu ?
Offer the possibility to use a derivated of Ubuntu on small systems and limited hardwares.
Create a derivated using LXDE
Is targeted at machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer hardware.
System Requirements
Memory (RAM):
For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive, and Facebook, your
computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM. For local programs like LibreOffice and simple
browsing habits, your computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM.
Processor (CPU):
The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8. Older
processors are too slow and the AMD K7 has problems with Flash video
Features
1. System Settings and Preferences
Customize almost everything in your
desktop: icons and visual settings, manage
users, add free apps and games, connect
printers and other devices, etc.
2. Office
View and create compatible Word
documents with Abiword word processor and
Gnumeric spreadsheet, and read PDF files.
3. Internet
Browse the web, read your e-mails,
download torrents with Transmission, or chat
on multiple accounts
4. Multimedia
Listen to the music stored in your computer
or radio streaming with Audacious, play
movies with Gnome-Mplayer, and burn discs
with XFBurn.
5. Graphics and Imaging
You can obtain images from your scanner
with an easy interface, view any kind of
graphic documents, your favorite photos, or
make simple drawings.
6. Accessories
A lot of tools to satisfy your daily needs, such
as a calculator, a text editor, a file
(de)compressor, sticky notes and, of course,
a Unix-like terminal.
7. Desktop
◦ PCManFM is a feature-rich, but lightweight
and incredibly fast file manager.
Installation
The lubuntu Installation Guide
Installation for most users should be straight-forward and easy.
Step 0: Pre-installation
Before installing Lubuntu, be sure to disable Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS, if the options
exist. Some distros can work with Secure Boot enabled, but we still recommend disabling it for
various reasons.
Step 0: Pre-installation(Cont.)
 If you have Windows installed and wish to dual-boot, do the following: go to Power Options ->
Choose what the power buttons do -> Change settings that are currently unavailable ->
Disable “Fast startup (recommended)” and Hibernation, update Windows, restart, shrink
Windows from within Windows using Disk Management to create “Unallocated Space”
(preferably, at least 60 GB) for Linux, update Windows, restart.
Step 1: Creating Installation Media
After you’ve downloaded the ISO file. You will either need to burn this image to a DVD or you
will need to put it on an 4+ GB flash drive. You can use the included software in your OS to burn
it to a DVD.
Step 2: The Actual Installation:
 Reboot the computer and select the flash drive or DVD. If you disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS
(if applicable), this should be easy.
The Actual Installation(Cont.)
When the image boots, select “Try”. You can proceed with the installation from “Try”, too, but
the “Try” just loads up the live session all the way, which allows you to run programs other than
the installer just in case we need to do other things. From the “Try” session, you should connect
to WiFi if applicable, as WiFi is one of the most likely things to have problems working (it still
works >95% of the time out of the box) so it’s good to check if it works from here.
The Rest of the Installation
The rest of the installation should be mostly self-explanatory. You have to enter the username
and password that you want, choose your computer’s name, set your timezone, etc.
Once the installation has finished, it will ask you to reboot. Do it, and log in.
If you are dual-booting, you should also make note of GRUB, the tool that allows you to select
which OS you want when your computer starts up..
Merits of Lubuntu
Lubuntu is considered a great distribution for slower computers because it uses a less
computationally intensive graphical interface (LXDE = Lightweight X desktop environment
instead of e.g. Unity on Ubuntu).
It also provides different, more lightweight programs, e.g. AbiWord instead of LibreOffice for
text editing.
Lower memory usage means there's more space for your programs to run, meaning they'll
load faster and in many cases will run faster.
THANK YOU

  • 4. History lubuntu 17.10 has been released! Lubuntu is a lightweight Linux flavor using Ubuntu and LXDE as its base. The project’s goal is to provide a lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically targets older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer hardware. Along with a simple but usable graphical user interface, Lubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their small footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive. Where can I download it? On the server with the following architectures: Download lubuntu amd64 (64-bit suitable for most computers) Download lubuntu i386 (32-bit most PCs before 2007)
  • 5. What is Lubuntu ? Derivated of Ubuntu, using LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as desktop environnement.  Optimized for slow computers and limited hardware Graphical interfaces Including support for most if users' needs for a desktop usage. Works with • 128 Mb of RAM • 3Gb of disk
  • 6. Why Lubuntu ? Offer the possibility to use a derivated of Ubuntu on small systems and limited hardwares. Create a derivated using LXDE Is targeted at machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer hardware.
  • 7. System Requirements Memory (RAM): For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive, and Facebook, your computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM. For local programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing habits, your computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM. Processor (CPU): The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8. Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7 has problems with Flash video

  • 15. 7. Desktop ◦ PCManFM is a feature-rich, but lightweight and incredibly fast file manager.
  • 17. The lubuntu Installation Guide Installation for most users should be straight-forward and easy. Step 0: Pre-installation Before installing Lubuntu, be sure to disable Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS, if the options exist. Some distros can work with Secure Boot enabled, but we still recommend disabling it for various reasons.
  • 18. Step 0: Pre-installation(Cont.)  If you have Windows installed and wish to dual-boot, do the following: go to Power Options -> Choose what the power buttons do -> Change settings that are currently unavailable -> Disable “Fast startup (recommended)” and Hibernation, update Windows, restart, shrink Windows from within Windows using Disk Management to create “Unallocated Space” (preferably, at least 60 GB) for Linux, update Windows, restart.
  • 19. Step 1: Creating Installation Media After you’ve downloaded the ISO file. You will either need to burn this image to a DVD or you will need to put it on an 4+ GB flash drive. You can use the included software in your OS to burn it to a DVD. Step 2: The Actual Installation:  Reboot the computer and select the flash drive or DVD. If you disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot in BIOS (if applicable), this should be easy.
  • 20. The Actual Installation(Cont.) When the image boots, select “Try”. You can proceed with the installation from “Try”, too, but the “Try” just loads up the live session all the way, which allows you to run programs other than the installer just in case we need to do other things. From the “Try” session, you should connect to WiFi if applicable, as WiFi is one of the most likely things to have problems working (it still works >95% of the time out of the box) so it’s good to check if it works from here.
  • 21. The Rest of the Installation The rest of the installation should be mostly self-explanatory. You have to enter the username and password that you want, choose your computer’s name, set your timezone, etc. Once the installation has finished, it will ask you to reboot. Do it, and log in. If you are dual-booting, you should also make note of GRUB, the tool that allows you to select which OS you want when your computer starts up..
  • 22. Merits of Lubuntu Lubuntu is considered a great distribution for slower computers because it uses a less computationally intensive graphical interface (LXDE = Lightweight X desktop environment instead of e.g. Unity on Ubuntu). It also provides different, more lightweight programs, e.g. AbiWord instead of LibreOffice for text editing. Lower memory usage means there's more space for your programs to run, meaning they'll load faster and in many cases will run faster.
