A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Strategies for Effective Upskilling is a presentation by Chinwendu Peace in a Your Skill Boost Masterclass organisation by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan on 08th and 09th June 2024 from 1 PM to 3 PM on each day.

FADE IN:
SCENE 1: INT. FRONT ROOM RICKY’S OLD HOME. NIGHT.
During this scene, it is shown to the audience that there
is regrets that Ricky’s parents have. During this scene we
see Jenny (Ricky’s mum) sobbing in the corner of the room
whilst Dave (Ricky’s dad) is comforting her. We see a run
down untidy front room in Ricky’s house. JENNY (Rick’s mum)
sits sobbing in the corner of the room. DAVE (Ricky’s dad)
is comforting her, they are both sat on a shabby sofa.
JENNY
Dave, why did this happen to us?
DAVE
(Sighs) I really don’t know, we will get
through this though. Okay?
JENNY
(Starts sobbing) My poor boy is out there
and nobody seems to care.
(Start to walk and get some
food)
DAVE
I promise you we have the police doing
everything they can and we can’t do
anything to help.
(Follows her to the kitchen)
SCENE 2: INT. KITCHEN. NIGHT.
JENNY
How am I supposed to just sit here and
hope that they’re doing everything in
their power to find my missing son?
DAVE
(Calmly) Jenny please stop worrying about
this when nobody can do anything to change
this situation.
(Dave sits down and pulls
3. 3
Jenny onto the sofa to sit by
him and comforts her.)
JENNY
(Calming down) Okay Dave, I trust you.
It’s just so hard for me I can’t just sit
here and watch. I’m going to bed.
(Jenny leaves the room)
DAVE
(Under his breath) For fucks sake
(Dave pours himself a drink
and starts laughing to
himself.
SCENE 3 EXT. FOREST. DAY.
Ricky is going about his normal day in the forest. We see
him climbing out of his hammock and starts to prepare for
his day. He just walks around his little camp that he has
made and starts to change clothes and wash himself.
INT. RICKY’S OLD HOME. KITCHEN DAY.
Jenny and Dave are preparing to visit the police station to
ask about the case and how it is going. Dave is resistant
to leaving the house and Jenny gets suspicious about it.
JENNY
Morning darling, let’s go to the station
and see how our case is going.
DAVE
(Starts eating) Okay, can we go down a bit
later? I’d love to just grab breakfast
with you and relax for once.
JENNY
Doesn’t the station close at 4 today to
the public though?
DAVE
Don’t worry I’m sure it closes at 6.
4. 4
JENNY
(Breaking down) Dave, does this not
concern you at all, you really don’t seem
to care?
DAVE
(Sternly) Of course I care about our son
Jenny, I really just don’t feel like we
can do anything here.
JENNY
(Angrily) Fine, I’ll go by myself.
DAVE
Don’t do that.
(Dave grabs Jenny’s wrist and
won’t let her leave. Jenny
starts to know something is
wrong.)
(Jenny starts to look
worried and reaches for the
phone, Dave doesn’t let that
happen.)
EXT. POLICE STATION. DAY
In this scene the police officers are discussing the case.
They don’t know what to do and are concerned about it with
no plan. They call Jenny and Dave but nobody picks up and
they are get a bad feeling about it. More descriptive
OFFICER 1
Officer, what can we do, there is no hope
for this case the boy is gone for good I
think and likely dead. How can we tell the
parents?
OFFICER 2
I agree but it would be really bad if we
tell them it is going perfectly and then
the outcome is disappointing for them,
they would be heartbroken.
5. 5
(Phone starts to ring in the
background.)
OFFICER 1
Seems we have something more to deal with
now though.
(Officer 1 picks up the
phone.)
Hello?
WOMAN ON THE PHONE
(Worried and stuttering) I’ve just seen
someone break into the house next to me
and heard a lot of screaming and glass
breaking, please hurry!)
OFFICER 1
Ok, we are on the way. Stay in your house
and keep eyes on the burglar if you can,
stay on the line and describe what you saw
in more detail.
WOMAN ON THE PHONE
He was wearing all black, I didn’t get a
good view he was too far away but I have
CCTV cameras that I’d be happy for you to
look over.
OFFICER 1
That would be very helpful, keep me
updated on what is happening.
WOMAN ON PHONE
You have to hurry he is running down Hill
Road, he doesn’t seem to have anything
with him though.
OFFICER 1
It looks like we won’t get there in time
but get the CCTV footage for us and we
will get him for you.
6. 6
WOMAN ON THE PHONE
Okay, I can get that for you. Thank you
officer
(Puts down the phone.)
OFFICER 2
What is it?
OFFICER 1
Damn, that’s weird a burglary right next
to Dave and Jenny, we are going to get
CCTV tapes now.
OFFICER 2
It probably isn’t linked though, right?
OFFICER 1
Who knows with a town like this, young
teens going missing isn’t exactly normal?
(Starts to chuckle.)
OFFICER 2
You aren’t wrong.
INT. WOMAN ON THE PHONES HOUSE. DAY.WHERE IN THE HOUSE
Where are we, describe The police and the woman discuss the
CCTV tapes and a new problem comes up, the crime at hand is
put aside for the moment because of a specific part of the
tape relating to Ricky’s missing status.
OFFICER 1
Hello ma’am, we are here about a recent
break in you witnessed?
WOMAN
Yes, come in.
OFFICER 1
So can you explain to us roughly what
happened?
7. 7
WOMAN
Of course, I was just going about my
normal day and all of a sudden I heard
screams and breaking glass and I looked
around to see a man wearing all black,
probably 5’10” and stocky running out of
the house.
OFFICER 2
Interesting, can we see the CCTV? Firstly
we have to find out why he was there if he
left with nothing.
WOMAN
Of course.
(The woman goes to collect
the CCTV)
OFFICER 1
Why would anyone break into a house for
absolutely no reason, there had to be
incentive.
OFFICER 2
I’m not sure, it really doesn’t make sense
though.
WOMAN
Here we go, took a bit of digging but I’ve
got it.
(Plays the film. As the film
plays out they don’t talk at
all until apart from about ¾
of the way through.)
OFFICER 1
Isn’t this the wrong tape? The date is
months ago.
(Room stays silent, woman
ignores it and officer 2
seems to be watching
8. 8
intently.)
OFFICER 2
(Pointing at the screen) STOP! Go back!
OFFICER 1
What is it buddy?
WOMAN
To about here?
(Pointing at around the
middle.)
OFFICER 2
Yes, perfect.
(Tape plays.)
OFFICER 2
Is that Ricky?
(Part of the tape shows a man
holding a child by his neck
and throwing him onto the
road in the corner of the
screen.)
OFFICER 1
Son of a bitch. It’s his father we need to
talk to him right now. Sorry ma’am we will
report this break in to the station but
for the moment I hope you understand the
importance of this case with Ricky.
(Both officers walk towards
the door and go outside.)
WOMAN
No worries officer, thanks very much.
(Shuts the door on them.)
INT. POLICE VEHICLE. DAY.
9. 9
Describe what we see This short scene is very important to
the film and the audience is realizing why Ricky is missing
now. It is revealed that his father may be responsible for
a lot of the problems that are currently happening in the
town.
OFFICER 1
(Ecstatic) This is a breakthrough, there’s
a chance we can solve the Ricky problem
once and for all.
OFFICER 2
Brilliant, their house is coming up right
here.
(Vehicle stops.)
DAVE
Hi officers.
(Sounding muffled because the
camera is inside the car and
the windows are closed.)
OFFICER 1
Hi Dave, think we could have a chat
quickly? Come back to the station with us.
(Rolls down window.)
DAVE
(Resisting)Officers, I think you have the
wrong guy, what have I done?
(All get into the vehicle and
officers stay silent for the
ride. We see them drive away
then it cuts to them pulling
up at the station.)
INT. POLICE STATION. DAY.WHERE
Describe In this scene, Dave is arrested and the police
find out information about Ricky. The main build is
finished and my short film is getting to the main part.
10. 10
Dave isn’t happy and resists for a long time before he lets
the officers take him.
OFFICER 1
(Struggling to move Dave, angrily) Come,
we are going to an interrogation room.
Just me and you.
DAVE
Oh no...
(Tape starts to play.)
OFFICER 1
Do you remember this night?
DAVE
Vaguely, I made a mistake, please don’t
tell my wife.
(Camera leaves the room and
we see them talking for a
little bit.)
OFFICER 1
David, you’re under arrest for the abuse
of a minor. If you have more information
about Ricky it will almost definitely
affect your sentence time.
DAVE
Okay, Okay, I’ll tell you.
OFFICER 1
You know?
DAVE
Of course, he is somewhere in the western
forest.
OFFICER 1
(Softly)Thank you for telling us, Dave.
11. 11
OFFICER 2
(To officer 1) Let’s go.
EXT. WESTERN FOREST. DAY.
Describe This short scene is showing Ricky hearing the
police coming and he knows something is wrong and he might
need to run.
RICKY
(Sighs and starts to seem
alerted as he hears car
noises in the distance.)
OFFICER 1
(In the car) We are going to get him pal,
I can feel it.
OFFICER 2
(Unhopefully) I sure hope so.
RICKY
(Back to the forest)
(Ricky starts to look
concerned and starts to run.)
OFFICER 2
Hey, there he is.
(They pull up and see Ricky
running.)
OFFICER 1
HEY! Come back here Ricky!
12. 12
(The officers get out the car
and start to chase him.)
RICKY
(Ricky is starting to get out
of breath, he is out of
practice from playing sports
and needs to rest at a tree.)
OFFICER 2
Ricky, what are you doing?
(The officers catch up to
Ricky.)
RICKY
Sorry guys! It’s my dad, I cannot go back.
(He sounds out of breath.)
OFFICER 1
Don’t worry buddy, we know what he did,
come back with us for a chat please.
RICKY
Okay.
INT. POLICE STATION. DAY.
This scene takes place in an interrogation room, Ricky
seems timid and the police officers worried for him and his
mental health as he seems to have suffered through a lot of
things. During this time his dad is held whilst waiting for
a court case.
OFFICER 1
Ricky, you only have to say what you’re
comfortable with saying, we are only here
to help but we understand that it isn’t at
all easy to talk about these sort of
topics.
(Officer 1 is speaking in a
very serious tone and keeping
stern eye contact with
13. 13
Ricky.)
RICKY
I don’t think there’s much to say, you’ve
seen what he did to me in that CCTV
footage and honestly it was just always
like that frequently.
(Ricky is breaking down
whilst saying this.)
OFFICER 1
Okay, we understand if you don’t want to
go into detail now. We will contact you in
the future but for now we will deal with
your father and you will be released back
to your mother.
(Officer 1 is sat down
comforting Ricky and speaking
in a stern and serious tone.)
RICKY
(Thankfully and softly) Thank you.
EXT. POLICE STATION. DAY.WHERE
Ricky is reunited with his mother, after they have a little
chat they continue to hug whilst the camera zooms out where
it goes to a black screen.
JENNY
(Breaking down) Ricky my baby I haven’t
seen you in so long where have you been?
I’m so sorry.
RICKY
I’m so sorry mum, I just couldn’t tell
anyone and I couldn’t put up with him
anymore, we can talk about it later but
I’m just happy to see what’s left of my
family now.
(Ricky is hugging his mum
outside the police station
with his head buried into her
14. 14
chest, he is sobbing.)
JENNY
(Now sobbing)I’m sorry Ricky, I should’ve
been there for you.
