Long and short vowels (face
to face)
Jana Naboulsi 2020
First Step
• I will start by showing the students a video which is a short story that
contains words of short and long vowels which will be highlighted.
Second Step
• We will repeat together the highlighted words.
• Then, I will ask them if they noticed any change in the tone of each
word we said.
Third step
• I will display an animated PowerPoint that has a voice over, which I
recorded, that explains the difference between long and short vowels.
• Then, I will explain the rule. After that, I will write more words on the
board and ask the students to read them aloud - to check if they’d
read them correctly.
Fourth step
• I will reread the short story which they listened to in the first video
and ask them to tell me the words they noticed that contain long and
short vowels in addition to specifying the type.
• Then I will give them my feedback and correct the wrong answers.
Fifth step
• At the end of the session, we will play a game where I will divide the
class into two groups. Group 1 is called long vowels and Group 1 is
called short vowels.
• Each group should say one word according to the group’s title/name.
The group which stops saying words will lose and the other group
would win.

Long and short vowels

  • 1. Long and short vowels (face to face) Jana Naboulsi 2020
  • 2. First Step • I will start by showing the students a video which is a short story that contains words of short and long vowels which will be highlighted.
  • 3. Second Step • We will repeat together the highlighted words. • Then, I will ask them if they noticed any change in the tone of each word we said.
  • 4. Third step • I will display an animated PowerPoint that has a voice over, which I recorded, that explains the difference between long and short vowels. • Then, I will explain the rule. After that, I will write more words on the board and ask the students to read them aloud - to check if they’d read them correctly.
  • 5. Fourth step • I will reread the short story which they listened to in the first video and ask them to tell me the words they noticed that contain long and short vowels in addition to specifying the type. • Then I will give them my feedback and correct the wrong answers.
  • 6. Fifth step • At the end of the session, we will play a game where I will divide the class into two groups. Group 1 is called long vowels and Group 1 is called short vowels. • Each group should say one word according to the group’s title/name. The group which stops saying words will lose and the other group would win.
