1. Lesson Plan: Telephone
Preparation
Level Pre-intermediate
Lesson
Length
45 mins
Objective To teach the vocabulary of telephone conversations and get student more
comfortable talking without seeing body/facial expressions.
Target Language Hello/Good Morning/Afternoon
I’d like to speak to…
Who’s calling please?
Could you hold on?
Could you repeat that please?
The connection is very bad
Would you like to leave a message?
Could you spell that please?
What is your number?
It was a pleasure talking to you.
Assumed Knowledge The student knows basic grammar, conjugations and vocabulary. He may be
familiar with some of the phrases above. However, some may be new to him
and some he may know but says it incorrectly.
Anticipated Problems My student is a visual learner, and without the bodily/facial feedback he can
see from someone else, he has a more difficult time understanding English.
Solutions We have to start off speaking very slowly, and then repeat the exercises,
increasing in speed every time until he becomes comfortable and understands
what is happening.
Preparation and Aids Flash cards, audio recordings of telephone conversations.
Here is a great YouTube video of a telephone conversation:

conversations. Listen to the first one all the way through. Then
before I start it for the second time, ask the student to point out
the parts that he could not understand the first time. Help him
pick out the words he did not hear, or words that he heard but
did not know their meaning. Explain idioms and colloquialisms
as they come.
