The liver is the largest organ located in the right upper quadrant of the abdominal cavity. It performs many vital functions including excretion, metabolism, hematological functions, storage, detoxification, and protein synthesis. Liver function tests (LFTs) evaluate the liver's ability to function properly through measurements of enzymes and proteins in blood and urine samples. Elevated levels of certain enzymes and proteins can indicate liver inflammation, injury, or disease. LFTs help physicians diagnose conditions affecting the liver such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer, or blockages of the bile ducts.
