Words that cannot always be ‘sounded out’
Teaching Techniques:
• look at the word and say it aloud
• Group into families (e.g. so / go / no)
• ‘take a picture of it’ in your head
• close your eyes
• try to write it (e.g.in the air/on back)
• check the sequence of letters

• Use finger phonemes –for building words – listening for first / middle /
last
• Hunting for items beginning with … / awareness of sounds / same &

• Ask open questions when reading –Why? How?What if? Encourage your
child to ask questions too

vocabulary
• Pure sounds – not adding a vowel
