Lipril Tablets (Generic Lisinopril Dihydrate Tablets)

Lipril (Generic Lisinopril Dihydrate Tablets) belongs to a group of
medicines called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and
are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure and
to improve survival in patients in patients who have just had a heart
attack.
Generic Lisinopril tablets are indicated for the treatment of hypertension
in adult patients and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older to lower
blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk of fatal and non-
fatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions.
Generic Lisinopril tablets are indicated to reduce signs and symptoms of
systolic heart failure. Generic Lisinopril tablets are indicated for the
reduction of mortality in treatment of hemodynamically stable patients
within 24 hours of acute myocardial infarction.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient present in Lipril tablets is Lisinopril
Dihydrate.
Each tablet of Lipril contains Lisinopril Dihydrate equivalent to
2.5 mg, 5 mg or 10 mg of Lisinopril.

Lisinopril Dihydrate tablets are available
under various drug trade names that
include Lipril, Linark , Linvas, Nivant,
Odace, Lislo, Lisinace, Lisoril, Biopril,
Acinopril, Cipril, Lisir, Nivant, Lisnop,
Lislo, Prevace, Listril, Lisitec and Zestril.

Uses of Lipril Tablets
Lipril (Generic Lisinopril Dihydrate Tablets) is used alone or together
with other medicines to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). High
blood pressure adds to the workload of the heart and arteries. If it
continues for a long time, the heart and arteries may not function
properly. This can damage the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and
kidneys resulting in a stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure. Lowering
blood pressure can reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
Lisinopril works by blocking a substance in the body that causes the
blood vessels to tighten. As a result, lisinopril relaxes the blood vessels.
This lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and
oxygen to the heart.

Uses of Lipril Tablets
Lisinopril is also used to help treat heart failure. It is also used
in some patients after a heart attack. After a heart attack, some
of the heart muscle is damaged and weakened. The heart
muscle may continue to weaken as time goes by. This makes it
more difficult for the heart to pump blood. Lisinopril may be
started within 24 hours after a heart attack to increase survival
rate.

Lipril Tablets Dosage
The recommended dosage of Lipril tablets (Generic Lisinopril
Dihydrate Tablets) is administered orally once a day, with or
without meals. It is given below:
Hypertension: The initial adult dosage is 10 mg (monotherapy) or 5 mg
(on a diuretic) once daily. Titrate up to 40 mg daily based on response.
Initial dose in patients 6 years of age and older is 0.07 mg/kg (up to 5 mg
total) once daily
Heart Failure: The initial adult dosage is 5 mg once daily. Increase dose as
tolerated to 40 mg daily
Acute Myocardial Infarction(MI): Administer 5 mg within 24 hours of MI
followed by 5 mg after 24 hours, then 10 mg once daily

Contraindications
Lipril tablets are contraindicated in persons with a
hypersensitivity (allergy) to Lisinopril Dihydrate or any of the
other ingredients of this medicine.
This medicine is also contraindicated in patients who have a
history of angioedema (hereditary or idiopathic) or who have
diabetes and are taking aliskiren.

Storage Instructions
Lipril Tablets (Generic Lisinopril Dihydrate
Tablets) have to be stored at controlled room
temperature i.e. from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to
77°F) with excursions permitted between 15°
to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away
from children and pets.

Warnings
Angioedema: Discontinue Lipril (Generic Lisinopril Dihydrate
Tablets), provide appropriate therapy and monitor until resolved.
Renal impairment: Monitor renal function periodically.
Hypotension: Patients with other heart or renal diseases have
increased risk, monitor blood pressure after initiation.
Hyperkalemia: Monitor serum potassium periodically.
Cholestatic jaundice and hepatic failure: Monitor for jaundice or
signs of liver failure.

Side Effects
Incidence of Lipril (Lisinopril Dihydrate Tablets) Side effects differs
depending on which indication the patient is being treated for.
People taking Lisinopril for the treatment of hypertension may
experience the following side effects: Headache (3.8%), Dizziness
(3.5%), Cough (2.5%), Difficulty swallowing or breathing (signs
of angioedema), allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), Hyperkalemia
(2.2% in adult clinical trials), Fatigue (1% or more), Diarrhea
(1% or more).
Some severe skin reactions have been reported rarely, including toxic
epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome; causal
relationship has not been established.

Side Effects
People taking Lisinopril for the treatment of myocardial infarction may
experience the following side effects: Hypotension (5.3%), Renal
dysfunction (1.3%)
People taking Lisinopril for the treatment of heart failure may
experience the following side effects: Hypotension (3.8%), Dizziness
(12% at low dose – 19% at high dose), Chest pain (2.1%), Fainting
(5-7%), Hyperkalemia (3.5% at low dose – 6.4% at high dose),
Difficulty swallowing or breathing (signs of angioedema), allergic
reaction (anaphylaxis), Fatigue (1% or more), Diarrhea (1% or
more). Some severe skin reactions have been reported rarely.

Overdose
Following a single oral dose of 20 g/kg no lethality occurred in rats, and
death occurred in one of 20 mice receiving the same dose. The most
likely symptoms of Lisinopril Dihydrate (Lipril tablets) overdosage
would be hypotension, for which the usual treatment would be
intravenous infusion of normal saline solution. Lisinopril can be
removed by hemodialysis.

Lipril Tablets During Pregnancy
Lisinopril Dihydrate (Lipril tablets) has been classified by the US
FDA as Pregnancy Category D.
Use of medicines like Lipril that act on the renin-angiotensin system
during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy reduces fetal renal
function and increases fetal and neonatal morbidity and death.
Resulting oligohydramnios can be associated with fetal lung hypoplasia
and skeletal deformations. Potential neonatal adverse effects include skull
hypoplasia, anuria, hypotension, renal failure, and death.
When pregnancy is detected, discontinue Lisinopril tablets as soon as
possible.
