Governance involves institutionalizing a system through which citizens, institutions, and groups exercise their rights and interests for the collective good, going beyond just government. Good governance principles include accountability, participation, rule of law, transparency. Social responsibility means businesses and individuals act to benefit society in addition to profit/shareholder value through legal, ethical, economic, and discretionary responsibilities. There is a strong link between good governance and social responsibility as governance encourages efficient resource use while requiring accountability and social responsibility aims to positively impact stakeholders. Multiple stakeholders can bring both conflict and convergence around these issues.

2. Governance and Government
- Government is a group of people who rule or run the
administration of a country. In other words, it may be said that
a government is the body of representatives that governs and
controls the state at a given time. Government is the medium
through which the power of the state is employed.
- Governance is the act of governing or ruling. It is the set of
rules and laws framed by the government that are to be
implemented through the representatives of the state. Simply
put, governance is what governments do.

3. Governance entails a larger scope and has a wider
meaning. Though the term “governance” has been
used to refer mostly to “government,” Governance
really goes beyond government. It involves the
institutionalization of a system through which
citizens, institutions, organizations, and groups in a
society articulate their interests, exercise their
rights, and mediate their differences in pursuit of
the collective good.

7. Social Responsibility
What Is Social Responsibility?
Social responsibility means that individual or
businesses, in addition to
maximizing shareholder value, must act in a manner
that benefits society. Social responsibility has become
increasingly important to investors and consumers who
seek investments that are not just profitable but also
contribute to the welfare of society and the

8. KINDS OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY :
1. LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY - Legal responsibilities are not only liable to the
individuals in the society but also to the businesses in the society. As business is an
entity itself, it must also follow laws and rules (eg. Govt regulations)
2. ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY - Ethical responsibilities include the behaviour of the
firm that is expected by the society but not codified in law.
3. ECONOMIC RESPONSIBILITY- The business itself is an economic activity. Its main
function is to earn profits. To earn profits means to understand the needs and
demands of consumers whether it be regarding the quality of the product or its price.
4. DISCRETIONARY RESPONSIBILITY -is voluntary and guided by a company's
desire to make social contributions not mandated by economics, law, or
ethics. Discretionary activities include philanthropic contributions that offer no direct
financial payback to the company and are not expected.

efficient delivery of services and social goals and between individual and
communal goals. The governance framework is there to encourage the
efficient use of resources and equally to require accountability ,
participation, observing the rule of Law, and transparency for the

to embrace responsibility for the individual or company's

12. Linkage between Good Governance and Social
Responsibility
Social responsibility is a term that is used to explain the contract, either
written or verbal, that a corporation or individual is required to accomplish
in its business environment. Every company has to ensure compliance
with specific standards that are set by the customers, society and
investors. While, majority of these compliances are available in the form
of regulations, some others are practised in good faith of the citizens
(Lockwood, 2010)
