Librarians' story of the PDA Service at the University of Queensland Rural Clinical School (Kaye Lasserre, William Chun and Lisa Kruesi)

Kaye Lasserre, William Chun and Lisa Kruesi University of Queensland The University of Queensland Library and the School of Medicine conducted the first major Australian trial of Personal Digital Assistants' (PDAs) use by medical students at the Rural Clinical Schoolduring 2003 and 2004. The trial became an ongoing PDA Service from 2005, and its role in enhancing medical education has been demonstrated by continued funding and senior management support. The PDA Service has helped to provide key health information resources for students on rural placements. Adoption of the Service has addressed some of the equity issues caused by inadequate Information Communication and Technology (ICT) infrastructure beyond urban centres. Rural students' use of information at the point of care facilitates learning and establishes good practice for future clinical decision making. This presentation will discuss the Rural Clinical School Librarians' story about the implementation of the PDA Service, the lessons learnt and why it was a component of "An Integrated Package of Innovative Rural Medical Education:Enhancing Student Outcomes and Increasing the Rural Medical Workforce", 2006 Carrick Award Winner for Australian University Teaching.

This document discusses a project to improve patient wait times and satisfaction scores at an ambulatory surgery center. Studies found actual surgery start times ranged from 6 minutes to 2 hours and 50 minutes later than scheduled. The average registration wait was 17 minutes and preparation time was 33 minutes. Recommendations include changing scheduling practices based on average surgeon times, dedicating registration staff, and educating staff on updating patients about delays every 15 minutes. Implementing these measures could increase satisfaction scores and the center's preference among patients.

Pathways to smoking care for cancer patients (P-SCIP): Stage 1
As survival from cancer has improved over time, the potential impact of cigarette smoking on cancer patients and survivors is of increasing relevance. In addition to increased risk of chronic disease such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, continued smoking after a cancer diagnosis increases the risk of second primary cancer, cancer recurrence and is a cause of treatment complications. As well the profound adverse impact of continued smoking on health outcomes in cancer patients, continued smoking among people with cancer incurs significant cost to the health system.

This study examined continued professional development opportunities for healthcare workers in Blantyre, Malawi. The study found that the most common forms of continued development were workshops/seminars and clinical handover meetings. Nearly all participants had attended a workshop in the past year. However, access to professional journals was very low, with few individuals subscribing personally and few health facilities subscribing. Most participants expressed interest in receiving free journals. This study analyzed the effects of harmonizing Thailand's three public health insurance schemes (UCS, SSS, CSMBS) on emergency medical services policy. The study found that:
1) Most emergency patients were of working age, and half were aware of the new policy, though many did not fully understand its provisions.
2) While the policy aimed to provide free emergency care, most patients still had to pay upfront and seek reimbursement.
3) Access to emergency services was often through self-referral to hospitals rather than the emergency medical hotline 1669, indicating a need to improve the emergency response system.

Sponsor companies are increasingly requiring methods like electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO) to ensure accurate and timely data collection from patients in drug trials. ePRO systems, like electronic diaries (eDiaries), have been shown to improve patient compliance compared to paper-based methods. eDiaries allow for real-time data entry and monitoring of compliance. ePRO can collect data from both patients and their caregivers, such as in pediatric studies or diseases affecting motor or cognitive function. Contrary to assumptions, the elderly and caregivers of children often have high compliance rates when using ePRO systems. Cancer patients are faced with a multitude of stressors, from diagnosis, through treatment, at recurrence, in the stages following treatment completion, and in the terminal phase. Psychosocial care has been highlighted as a critical aspect of providing comprehensive patient-focused care. Specifically, one of the goals of The NSW Cancer Plan 2011-2015 is to improve the quality of life of people with cancer and their carers. This project was initiated to improve the current psychosocial model of care at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre (TKCC), to better reflect an integrated, holistic and comprehensive model of patient-centred care.

Abstract
As mobile devices become ubiquitous, healthcare practitioners are exploring how using technological support in the workplace could advance their practice, communication and learning. This paper discusses findings from a research study funded by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in the UK, which investigated how using iPads impacted on physiotherapy and occupational therapy students’ learning, reflective practice and communication with peers and tutors during placement cycles. Similar to research carried out amongst physicians in 2009, the students found that the devices collapse ‘time and space’, because they permit users to access data and resources when moving between patients, wards and clinics (Prgoment et al., 2009). The paper also discusses how students used the iPads to interact with other professionals and patients while in hospital and community settings, as well as the usability of the devices and associated apps for improving their learning (Clay, 2010). Apps were found to be good tools for documenting individual learning histories, engaging with learning objects and developing personalised structured education (Ifenthaler & Schweinbenz, 2013). The project adopted a participatory action research approach. Eighteen student participants used iPads during their placements in a variety of settings for a period of 5 – 10 weeks. The students were supported by visiting tutors and practice educators over an eight-month period. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with students, visiting tutors and practice educators to ascertain the utility and acceptance of the devices in practice settings. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model developed by Venkatesh, V. et al. (2003) is used to analyse the acceptability and efficiency of the devices in clinical settings. In particular, the research focuses on why user acceptance is challenged by established practitioners, and why healthcare settings have not adapted their environs and infrastructure so mobile devices can be used more readily by practitioners.More Related Content

This time lag can have considerable implications for patients, their carers, health services, and public funds. The need for real-time access to outcomes data is well-recognized. However, providers, payers, and patients lack access to timely and relevant outcomes data to support informed decision-making and comparisons across providers and over time. To help address these gaps, MD Anderson initiated a project to develop patient-centered outcome measures and to integrate data collection within the electronic health record (EHR) in 2014.
An integrated model of psychosocial cancer care: a work in progress…
Cancer patients are faced with a multitude of stressors, from diagnosis, through treatment, at recurrence, in the stages following treatment completion, and in the terminal phase. Psychosocial care has been highlighted as a critical aspect of providing comprehensive patient-focused care. Specifically, one of the goals of The NSW Cancer Plan 2011-2015 is to improve the quality of life of people with cancer and their carers. This project was initiated to improve the current psychosocial model of care at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre (TKCC), to better reflect an integrated, holistic and comprehensive model of patient-centred care.

Abstract
As mobile devices become ubiquitous, healthcare practitioners are exploring how using technological support in the workplace could advance their practice, communication and learning. This paper discusses findings from a research study funded by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in the UK, which investigated how using iPads impacted on physiotherapy and occupational therapy students’ learning, reflective practice and communication with peers and tutors during placement cycles. Similar to research carried out amongst physicians in 2009, the students found that the devices collapse ‘time and space’, because they permit users to access data and resources when moving between patients, wards and clinics (Prgoment et al., 2009). The paper also discusses how students used the iPads to interact with other professionals and patients while in hospital and community settings, as well as the usability of the devices and associated apps for improving their learning (Clay, 2010). Apps were found to be good tools for documenting individual learning histories, engaging with learning objects and developing personalised structured education (Ifenthaler & Schweinbenz, 2013). The project adopted a participatory action research approach. Eighteen student participants used iPads during their placements in a variety of settings for a period of 5 – 10 weeks. The students were supported by visiting tutors and practice educators over an eight-month period. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with students, visiting tutors and practice educators to ascertain the utility and acceptance of the devices in practice settings. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model developed by Venkatesh, V. et al. (2003) is used to analyse the acceptability and efficiency of the devices in clinical settings. In particular, the research focuses on why user acceptance is challenged by established practitioners, and why healthcare settings have not adapted their environs and infrastructure so mobile devices can be used more readily by practitioners.Electronic Medical Records
This study assessed the use of personal digital assistants (PDAs) in conjunction with electronic medical records (EMRs) by physician assistants (PAs) through a questionnaire sent to recent graduates. Of 122 respondents, 72 used PDAs but only 5 used PDAs with EMRs, suggesting barriers to adoption. Those using PDAs and EMRs perceived benefits like improved quality of care and efficiency. However, adoption of the combined technology lags behind individual adoption, and future research is needed to understand barriers and promote integration.

The University of Queensland Library and the School of Medicine conducted the first major Australian trial of Personal Digital Assistants' (PDAs) use by medical students at the Rural Clinical Schoolduring 2003 and 2004. The trial became an ongoing PDA Service from 2005, and its role in enhancing medical education has been demonstrated by continued funding and senior management support.
The PDA Service has helped to provide key health information resources for students on rural placements. Adoption of the Service has addressed some of the equity issues caused by inadequate Information Communication and Technology (ICT) infrastructure beyond urban centres. Rural students' use of information at the point of care facilitates learning and establishes good practice for future clinical decision making.
This presentation will discuss the Rural Clinical School Librarians' story about the implementation of the PDA Service, the lessons learnt and why it was a component of "An Integrated Package of Innovative Rural Medical Education:Enhancing Student Outcomes and Increasing the Rural Medical Workforce", 2006 Carrick Award Winner for Australian University Teaching.

Objectives and Methods
Objective
The Arizona Health Information Network (AZHIN) is a consortium of 34 member health services institutions which range in size from academic institutions to small medical clinics. The goal of this project was to improve access to resources on-site and off-site by using a single sign-on product and improve the security of the resources by implementing a password management system.
Methods
In the past non-IP authenticated on-site and off-site access required AZHIN members to use a different username and password for each vendor’s products. Athens was selected for its ability to interact with vendors, provide single sign-on access to resources, and for its password and account management features. Resource access management through Athens permissions sets simplified any changes to the resources available and provided a way for organizations to use Athens authentication for resources they purchase separately. This implementation had several challenges related to the custom delivery of resources accessed through dynamically generated web pages and the use of a custom login method. Another challenge was the management of variations in URLs used by vendors for IP and Athens authentication, especially in the context of LinkSource, EBSCO’s link resolver.
Results and Conclusions
Athens is currently in use by 27 AZHIN member organizations, having added over 2,000 users in one year. The existing vendor-based password system will be discontinued at the end of June. Three of the larger academic institutions use local proxy systems for authentication and are not using Athens. Many of the obstacles could have been over come by requiring all users to log into Athens regardless of there ability to IP authenticate. We chose to take the more difficult route in order to provide more seamless access to resources when ever possible.

A toxic combination of 15 years of low growth, and four decades of high inequality, has left Britain poorer and falling behind its peers. Productivity growth is weak and public investment is low, while wages today are no higher than they were before the financial crisis.
