Leukemia is a type of cancer affecting the white blood cells, either developing abnormally in the bone marrow (chronic) or increasing rapidly as immature cells (acute). Common symptoms include flu-like symptoms, bruising, bleeding, headaches and nausea. Treatment may involve medication, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or bone marrow transplants depending on the type and severity. In 2011 it was estimated that around 44,600 people in the US would be diagnosed with leukemia and approximately 21,780 would die from it.
