Abstract: The purpose of this lesson is to teach students the MLA format.


Objectives (at the end of this lesson students will be able to):
   •    Use MLA format.
Standards Addressed:
ELA 19: Writing
Students will write with a clear focus, coherent organization, and sufficient detail.
ELA 21: Revising
Students will demonstrate improvement in organization, content, paragraph development,
level of detail, style, tone, and word choice (diction) in their compositions after revising
them.
ELA 24: Research
Students will gather information from a variety of sources, analyze and evaluate the
quality of the information they obtain, and use it to answer their own questions.


Guiding Questions:
How often in your life do you think you will need to use the MLA format?


Procedure
   •    Write a quote on the board with a citation and have students write a paragraph
        about it.
                1. Tell students to cite correctly using MLA format.
                2. Switch papers then go over how to cite correctly. Have students tell
                    me how to cite it.
                3. Have students correct each others work.
   •    Pass out handouts on citations.
   •    Go through handout as a class.

   •   Pass out worksheet with incorrect MLA citations.
   •   Have students correct each problem.
   •   Have students get their laptops.
   •   Have students correct their research papers according to the MLA format.
          -   Tell students they need to copy their essays from Google.docs to a word
              doc.
          -   Have students make their work cited page and correct any parenthetical
              references.
          -   Walk around and help students
Assessment
   •   MLA worksheet will be collected and graded
