Figurative Language and Imagery;
                               Create a Poem
Project Summary: Simile, metaphor, personification, and imagery are all literary terms which we have
learned within the past week. To fully know how well you understand these terms, you will have to
write a poem incorporating all of these devices within your work that are meant to reinforce one theme.
You can choose one of the themes from the list below.
Purpose: To fully understand the meaning and use of figurative language and imagery within poetry.

Writer’s Role: You, the skilled poet.

Audience: Me (Ms. Durand)

Form: Typed, double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font. The poem must be at least 8 lines long.
Put a title for the poem at the top of the page, and right underneath the title put “by” and then your
name.

Themes:
   • Love
   • Hate
   • Death
   • Nature
   • Individuality
   • Justice

Procedure:
    • Choose a theme
    • Brainstorm on how you feel about this theme, convey your opinion in your poem.
    • The poem could tell a story or just make a statement about the theme you choose.
    • Think of a way to portray your opinions or thoughts on that topic using a simile, metaphor, and
         personification.
    • Make sure to use imagery to describe a scene, a character, or even a thought, anything that is
         meant to stimulate the senses.
Grading:
You will be graded on:
    • Incorporating at least one simile within your poem that helps to convey the theme.       (25%)
    • Incorporating at least one example of personification that helps to convey the theme.    (25%)
    • Incorporating at least one metaphor that helps to convey the theme.                       (25%)
    • Using imagery to convey theme.                                                            (15%)
    • Having at least 8 lines.                                                                  (10%)
