Rationale:
The aim of English Language Arts is to provide students with opportunities for personal and
intellectual growth through speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing and representing to make
meaning of the world and to prepare them to participate effectively in all aspects of society.

USSR: Each class begins with fifteen minutes of silent reading. Pick books that you love! Utilize
different genres such as: biographies, historical fiction, sports writing, fantasy, mystery, psychology,
philosophy, film, inspirational, new age, science fiction, horror, memoir, or of the classics.
After each book, you must complete a response form. Marks will be awarded for the number of books
read, the variety of genres and difficulty level, the effort given to the response forms, arriving on time
for class with a good book, and reading silently for fifteen minutes. To score an A, you will be required
to read at least one book from the junior book selection.
Expectations:
The students will be held to the following expectations:
• Be in attendance and on time.
• Bring the necessary materials to class (USSR book, paper, pens, etc.).
• Complete the necessary work.
• Be respectful of classmates, the teacher and the classroom.
• No cell phones in class.
• If you are absent or late for ANY reason, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for all missed learning.
If something was assigned in class and you were not there, you are expected to contact someone
2. to find out what that was. Any absence must be followed with a note from a parent or
guardian.
• We want you to be successful in this course; if you are having difficulties, please come and see
me.
Late Assignments:
Assignments are due on the assigned date. Late assignments will be given a zero.
