Editor's Notes
Pre-Hispanic literature in the Philippines was in fact epics passed down from generation to generation,
initially through an oral tradition. Wealthy families, however, particularly in Mindanao, have managed to
keep transcribed copies of these epics as family heirloom.
During this period, Spaniard changed the first alphabet Alibata into Roman Alphabet for the reason that they believe Alibatas is a work of evil. Also, this period the Songs, Religious Drama and Dramasare being introduced. The pre-colonial inhabitants of our islands show a rich past through their folk speeches, folk songs, folk
narratives and indigenous rituals and mimetic dances that confirm our ties with our Southeast Asian
Neighbors.
• Used to be oral.
• Handed from generation to one generation by word of mouth.
• Pre-Spanish poets and storytellers had gifts of good memory because they can able to transmit oral literature without changing its original, omitting or changing details.
Daragang Magayon and Paganoron. It is said that when Mayon is about to erupt, Paguga is challenging Panganoron and when the Mayon is calm, Panganoron is embracing Magayon and that the tears of Panganoron are represented as rain in times of his grief. The viral picture reminds us Filipinos about the love story of Magayon and Panganoron, that love can really conquers all even in death and that true love is really hard to bury.
The Legend of Guava = The servants immediately go near the lying King, checked his pulse and shocked to find out that he's already dead. The King was buried with no condolences from the people.
The people choose a new King and had forgotten King Barabas.
One day, the servant of the new King panting while bringing the news to the new King. There was a fruit tree that grew on the King Barabas tomb. The tree has a lots of fruits.
"The tree was filled with fruits and everyone of them has a small crown," said the new King. He picked one fruit and opened it. "Oh, the fruit is filled with seeds. Hard and small seeds." Then the old woman shouted, "It's as hard as the heart of King Barabas."
Another old man tasted the fruit, "It's so sour, the same sour as the attitude and face of King Barabas!"
A narrative prose aim to tell the story of how an object, place, thing, or name originated.
