1. Rent Rehearsal Log
The focus of this rehearsal was for us as a class to
fi
nishing learning
the lines of the song, Seasons of love, and to also looking into adding
di
ff
erent harmonies, in order to improve our piece. We knew we had to assign the solo roles so we
chose to also focus on doing this within this rehearsal. It was important that we assigned these
roles early on so that the soloists could work individually on leaning their parts.
My SMART target for this rehearsal was to work on my projection and to also work on my vocal
range when it comes to the di
ff
erent harmonies which we add into the piece. Projection is a key
part that i need to focus on as due to my lack of con
fi
dence when singing I tend to
fi
nd myself
being very quiet and not fully projecting my voice towards the audience. My vocal range when it
came to the harmonies is also a very important aspect that I need to focus on as i was assigned
the lower note when it came to both our two part and three part harmony which means I must
work on being able to hold the note and keeping my volume up while going that low with the
song.
Our rehearsal was led in the drama studio with both the director and the musical director. We
decided as a class to make this the opening scene of our show case as not only did we want the
fi
rst scene to involve the entire class, but we also felt this was a very powerful piece which will act
as a very good opening for the showcase. We had already learnt some of the beginning of the
song during the workshops we had done, therefore we spent this rehearsal working through more
sections while also beginning to stage the piece. After listening to the professional version of
Season of love, we decided to add both a two part and a three part harmony into our version of
the song. In both harmonies I took the lower note with a few others. At
fi
rst we put the chorus
together with our di
ff
erent harmonies and sang it acapella then after added the backing track.
After the chorus it then goes into the soloists parts, which we gave to Evie, Ria and Phoebe.
During the solos, my main focus is on my acting and characterisation, as all of us have to show
that we are supporting and agreeing with what the soloist is singing, therefore our facial
expressions are key in doing so e
ff
ectively. For most parts of the song the musical director sang
through it with us in order to help us with the lines but most importantly to help us with the notes,
timings and harmonies. She also sang through with the soloists on their
fi
rst attempts, to make
them more comfortable and con
fi
dent with their individual parts. One thing the musical director
did pick up on with me and a few others was our projection and how we wasn’t projecting our
voices enough. Both her and the director also told us that as a class our acting/characterisation
needed a lot of work as we all looked very bored and nervous, when, in this piece, the characters
are supposed to every con
fi
dent and outgoing as they believe what they are saying is very
important. One exercise we did as a group was walking around the space while singing the song.
This helped us relax while becoming more comfortable with the lyrics therefore helped when it
came to our acting as after we all seemed less nervous and tense when singing. It also allowed us
to listen to everybody else as because when we are singing we are in a line across the front of the
stage which means, the people from opposite ends struggle to hear each other. This therefore
meant more of my peers were able to give me feedback. After hearing the feedback i was
reassured that I majorly needed to work on my projection as i was being loud enough which
meant that in the showcase some people in the audience may not be able to hear me. One way i
will work on this is through various vocal warm ups, as these will create a good lubrication for my
vocal cords therefore make it easier for me to push my voice to its full potential and limits.
One strength I had in this rehearsal was my learning of the lines and my input into our piece.
When i found out we were going to be performing this scene I made sure I listened to it in my own
time slo that when i came into this rehearsal i already had a good understanding of the song and
the di
ff
erent harmonies and lyrics within it, which made it easier for me to focus on other aspects
in this rehearsal. My input was a strength as when deciding on what harmonies we added in, I
brought forward the idea of adding the three part harmony, because at
fi
rst it was just another two
part harmony but after we trialed the two part I realised adding a third harmony would sound
good.
One weakness i had during this rehearsal was my projection. After getting peer feedback and
feedback from the musical director and the director it became very apparent that I wasn’t
successfully delivery my lines. This is a weakness that I also recognised in myself therefore in
2. order to work on this I will make sure in take part in various vocal warm ups before our next
sessions so that my vocal cords are properly warmed and up and I can perform to my best ability.
Another weakness i had during this rehearsal was my characterisation. I spent this rehearsal
putting most of my focus into just my vocal ability and making sure i was hitting the right notes,
therefore i was a lot less focused on embody my character which became very apparent during
this rehearsal. One way i will work on this is through the workshops we will do as a class where
we perform the song without any lyrics or music, just purely acting. This will help me focus on
how to properly embody my character throughout the whole song.
In this rehearsal i feel as if i achieved part of my SMART target. After looking back on the
rehearsal it is clear that projection is still an issue for me which needs much more work however
during this rehearsal i did manage to work on my vocal range when it comes to the di
ff
erent
harmonies. At
fi
rst I struggled to hit those lower notes but during this rehearsal i managed to do
so e
ff
ectively, therefore i came out of this session happy with the improvements i had made in that
aspect, however projection is still a skill i need to majorly work on before our showcase.
Here you can see that I am facing downwards
while singing. This is an aspect that is need to
work on within this piece as I am unable to
project my voice e
ff
ectively to the audience
when facing downwards.
Here I am roving a lot -
fi
dgeting and swaying.
Due to nerves and a lack of con
fi
dence I tend to
do this when singing. It is important that I work
on not doing this in order to sustain my
characterisation throughout.
