Leonardo da Vinci's famous piece was The Last Supper, a mural painting created for Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan between 1495-1498. It depicts the biblical scene from the Gospel of John of Jesus announcing one of his apostles would betray him. Leonardo took on the commission to paint this religious scene because it made financial sense for him to do work for his patron, the Duke of Milan. The intended audience for the fresco was Catholics and Christians.
