Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. During an MRI scan, hydrogen atoms in the body are aligned by a strong magnetic field and pulsed with radio waves, causing them to emit slight signals detected by a computer to form images. MRI provides clear views of soft tissues and organs without using ionizing radiation.
