Definitions
1. According to Davis (1991)
“To draw in smoke from burning tobacco
or other substances through the mouth and
let it out again is called smoking”
2. “Smoking is a practice where a
substance, most commonly tobacco, is
burned and the smoke tasted or inhaled”
Smoking Apparatus
1. Bidis: It consist of a small amount
of tobacco, hand-wrapped in dried
temburni leaf and tied with string.
Despite their small size, their tar
and carbon monoxide deliveries can
be higher than manufactured
2. Cigars: It is made of fermented
tobaccos with a tobacco wrapper, and
come in many shapes and sizes.
There was a revival of cigar smoking
at the end of the 20th century.
3. Kreteks: They are clove-
flavoured cigarettes. which has
an anaesthetizing effect,
allowing for deeper smoke
inhalation.
4. Pipes: are made of briar, slate,
clay or other substance –
tobacco is placed in the bowl
and inhaled through the stem,
sometimes through water.
Types of Smoking
 Mainstream Smoke: It is inhaled by the
smoker himself
 Side stream Smoke: It is the one which
is breathed by the people around the
smoker. This type is more poisonous
since it is not filtered.
Effects of Smoking
 Increase in air pollution
 The pulse of smoker beats faster and he gets
fume abruptly
 The vital organs of smoker become weaker
 It affect wind pipe and lungs
 Smoker suffer from cold and cough
 Smoker gets bad and dirty teeth
 Eye sight and digestion is damaged
 Death smoker gets heart trouble, it also caused
lungs cancer
 Blood pressure of smoker is higher than others
 Blood vessels are blocked and it hold
deficiency of vitamins
 Smoking is a gateway drug
 Smoker also caused accidents due to
carelessness.
 Use of tobacco produce lethargy
 Biggest cause of premature death
 Male and female smokers lose an average of
13.2 and 14.5 years of life, respectively
 Carbon monoxide cause headache, irritation of
eyes, allergies and throat troubles and
especially your heart work harder
 By careless throwing of cigarette butts, large
scale fires are broken out
 Cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases
the risk of low birth weight
Reasons for Smoking
 Due to role of electronic and print media
 Most of smokers are teenagers
 It is a symbol of status
 Younger children take interest by seeing
parents and elders
 Peoples use to reduce tension
 In developing countries it is useful to show
modernism
 In upper class is show of money and
wealth
 Some people smoke to spend their time
as hobby
 Many villagers have taken up smoking
for improving the digestive system
 No smoking day is observed on 31th May
Remedial Measure
1. Smoker must make up the mind for quit
smoking
2. Neither smoke in front of children nor ask
them to produce tobacco products from
market
3. Don’t smoke in presence of parents and wife
as marks of respect
4. While smoking keep wind direction in view so as
to protect companion from passive smoking
5. Smoke in reserved places only
6. Create awareness among general public
7. Establish smoking and non smoking corners
in community localities
8. Smoking be banned officially in all public
places and means of transport
9. Disallow running of advertisement over
electronic media
10. Chapter on smoking needs to include in
curriculum of school, college and university
11. Import of tobacco and its products be
declared as illegal act
12. Advance countries should persuade to think
above of their petty economic interest
13. International legislation be formulated to
curb cultivation, trading and manufacturing
of tobacco products
14. Tough anti smoking laws banning the
juvenile smoking are required to be framed
15. World summit on smoking must be held
every five years.
