2. Tobacco originated
in temperate climates of
America. The native
populations chewed and
smoked the leaves, and they
spread the plant throughout
the Americas 44, 46.
By the time of Columbus’s
landing on San Salvador in
1492, tobacco had reached
across the continent and
nearby islands, and the
leaves had become a form of
barter.
After Europeans arrived
in the Americas in the
late 15th
century tobacco smoking
as a recreational activity
became widespread.

3. • Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres are the first Europeans to
observe smoking. It was on Cuba and Jerez becomes a staunch
smoker, bringing the habit back with him to Spain.
• Jerez’s neighbours were so petrified of the smoke coming
out of his mouth and nose that he was soon arrested by the
Holy Inquisition and held in captivity for nearly 7 years.
• However, thanks to a lot of seafarers at the time, smoking
became an entrenched habit in both Spain and Portugal
before long.
4. SPREAD IN INDIA
• Tobacco cultivation started about 8000 years back.
• The Portuguese introduced tobacco in India during
1566.
• It became a valuable commodity and the
use spread like a wild fire.
• Earlier, it was restricted to the royal people but later
in 17th century even common people started using it.
• Portuguese traded it for Indian textiles and spices.
• Due to its addictive nature, it spread across the
country.
5. FORMS OF TOBACCO
• Cigarette
smokers are exposed to toxic and cancer-
causing chemicals that are created when
the cigarette is burned.
• Electronic Cigarettes
it use a heat source, powered by a battery,
to turn “e-liquid,” that contains nicotine
into an aerosol that is inhaled by the user.
• Waterpipes
Waterpipes are used to smoke specially
made tobacco that comes in a variety of
flavors like mint, cherry and licorice.
6. Forms of tobacco
• Cigars, Little Cigars, Cigarillos
Generally, cigars are cured tobacco
wrapped in leaf tobacco or a substance
containing tobacco.
• Dissolvable Products
They can be easily concealed as no
product disposal is needed. They are
sold as strips, sticks and look like candy.
• Snuff
It is a made from pulverised or ground
tobacco leaves.
8. TOBACCO AND CANCER
• Tobacco smoke contains at least 70 cancer-causing
chemicals.
• The link between smoking and cancer is very clear. It causes
at least 15 different types of cancer.
• Smoking causes around 7 in 10 lung cancer and other
cancers including mouth, pharynx (upper throat), nose and
sinuses, etc.
• Research has shown that for every 15 cigarettes smoked,
there is a DNA change which could cause a cell in the body
to become cancerous.
9. CANCER
Tar is the residue that’s left behind in your lungs from the
incomplete burning of the chemicals in a cigarette.
Chemicals in the tar inflict biological and physical damage on the
lungs.
This damage may encourage tumors and make it difficult for the
lungs to expand and contract properly.

11. SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS
• Consuming tobacco makes our clothes smell which
causes loss of friends.
• Loss of concentration in studies and work which can
lead to dropping out from school, college, etc.
• Tobacco consumers spend a lot of money on buying
cigarettes which leads to loss of money.
• Tobacco consumers often stay irritated due to which
they can be removed from jobs, again leading to
economic loss.
• Its not only the person who smokes but also the
person who inhales the smoke is at risk.
• A tobacco consumer is not respected by the society
so there are many reasons to quit tobacco.
12. ADDICTION
• Tobacco has a hazardous component called
‘Nicotine’.
• When nicotine enters our bloodstream, it reaches
the brain within seconds and triggers bio
chemical reactions.
• These reactions are interpreted by the brain as
‘rewarding’.
•Nicotine also acts on adrenal glands which forces
the releasing of natural stimulants like
‘adrenaline’ which triggers emotions in our body.

People generally start consuming tobacco in a
younger age probably during their teens

• We can spread information about the various harms of tobacco amongst the poor
and illiterate.
• Spreading awareness by taking part in various campaigns against tobacco .
• If our relative or friend has a habit of smoking then we can advise them to leave
the habit and also help them to quit.
• We should say straight ‘NO’ when someone recommend tobacco to us.
16. QUIT!
Quitting is the hardest thing for a tobacco consumer
but not impossible.
• Indulge in a new hobby.
• Start exercising regularly.
• Seek medical help if required.
• Use nicotine replacement therapy.
• Talk with your loved ones about your quitting plan.
• Set a date for quitting and be firm on your decision.
• Start doing meditation and practice deep breathing.
• Remove all the tobacco articles from your house,
office, car, etc.
17. NO SMOKING SIGNS
Smoking bans are public policies,
including criminal
laws and occupational safety and
health regulations, which
prohibit tobacco smoking in
workplaces and/or other public
spaces.
Restrictions are imposed only on the things which are harmful
for the population, then why don’t we understand that tobacco
is dangerous for our body!!.

• Ardi Rizal – a 2-year-old boy from Indonesia
made the headlines in 2010 for his smoking
habit of 40 cigarettes a day.

• Urea, a major component of urine, is added to
tobacco for flavouring.
• It turns your teeth and fingers yellow and
makes your body smell.
• Smokers are ten times more likely to develop
lung cancer.
• Cigarettes are a form of currency in some
countries.

23. WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY
• Each year, the World Health Organization (WHO) holds World No
Tobacco Day on May 31. It was created in the year 1987 by the
member states of WHO. Their goal is to spread awareness about
the risks of tobacco use and how we can make the world
tobacco free.
