Brave Heads and Lazy Teachers!
This will significantly improve the quality of education

Author’s observations:
The Head should be strong enough to stand up to the
external pressures coming at them for quality education
This is the way we do things here because this is what we
know our children need from us most.
Colleagues – teach the way we have agreed to do it.
Many teachers I meet feel scared and inhibited to try new
things because of what others might say, yet those in a school
with such a head enjoy a far greater freedom to innovate and
experiment.

The author suggest that teachers should step out of the
limelight a little more to allow the learners to be independent
learners, empowered by a teacher to experiment and innovate.
Lao Tsu in the Tao Te Ching, the ancient Chinese text describe:
“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his
work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say:
we did it ourselves”

So many teachers are self-confessed control freaks.
Do they enter the profession because they are control
freaks or do they become control freaks once they have
entered the profession?
Until someone does some serious research on such a
question, we will never know the answer. Yet the fact that
they indubitably are so remains.

Control is like respect.
Remember, you can’t control students.
You can control yourself and influence your students.
What’s more, your influence is greater than your power.
Don’t be a control freak, be an influence freak.

Being a ‘lazy teacher’ is all about giving the learners as much
control as possible over their own learning and letting go a whole
lot more yourself, from planning lessons to communicating tasks
to being the one main source of learning in the classroom.
Which is where technology and, yes, Google comes in.

The word ‘enthusiasm’, comes from the Greek word
‘entheos’ meaning, literally, ‘the God within’.
We talk on motivation but, here again, we need to be
aware of de-motivation.
Students who come to the lesson ready and willing to
learn but become switched off by our behaviours and
attitudes.

(Mehrabian and Ferris 1967 quoted in Lapakko 1997)
And the fact that great teachers use this to their advantage
The combined effect of simultaneous verbal, vocal and
facial attitude communications is a weighted sum of their
independent effects –with the coefficients of
0.07, 0.38 and 0.55 respectively.

The Journal of Teacher Education list the following eight overall
component factors on enthusiasm training:
1. Vocal Delivery – e.g. changes in tone, pitch, speed, etc.
2. Eyes – ‘dancing, snapping, shining . . .’ etc.
3. Gestures – to include the ‘body, head, arms, hands and face’
4. Movements – e.g. ‘large body movements’
5. Facial Expression – e.g. expressing emotions through
changes in facial expressions
6. Word Selection – e.g. colour and variety of words used
7. Acceptance of Ideas and Feelings – e.g. praise, non-
threatening responses, open to ideas . . .
8. Overall Energy – ‘explosive, exuberant, high degree of
vitality, drive and spirit throughout the lesson’.

Lecture 15 Why do I Need a Teacher When I have got Google by Prof. prabhat sahu

NationalInstituteofScience&Technology Author’s observations: The Head should be strong enough to stand up to the external pressures coming at them for quality education This is the way we do things here because this is what we know our children need from us most. Colleagues – teach the way we have agreed to do it. Many teachers I meet feel scared and inhibited to try new things because of what others might say, yet those in a school with such a head enjoy a far greater freedom to innovate and experiment.

NationalInstituteofScience&Technology The author suggest that teachers should step out of the limelight a little more to allow the learners to be independent learners, empowered by a teacher to experiment and innovate. Lao Tsu in the Tao Te Ching, the ancient Chinese text describe: “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves”

NationalInstituteofScience&Technology So many teachers are self-confessed control freaks. Do they enter the profession because they are control freaks or do they become control freaks once they have entered the profession? Until someone does some serious research on such a question, we will never know the answer. Yet the fact that they indubitably are so remains.
  • 7. NationalInstituteofScience&Technology Control is like respect. Remember, you can’t control students. You can control yourself and influence your students. What’s more, your influence is greater than your power. Don’t be a control freak, be an influence freak.
  • 8. NationalInstituteofScience&Technology Being a ‘lazy teacher’ is all about giving the learners as much control as possible over their own learning and letting go a whole lot more yourself, from planning lessons to communicating tasks to being the one main source of learning in the classroom. Which is where technology and, yes, Google comes in.
  • 10. NationalInstituteofScience&Technology The word ‘enthusiasm’, comes from the Greek word ‘entheos’ meaning, literally, ‘the God within’. We talk on motivation but, here again, we need to be aware of de-motivation. Students who come to the lesson ready and willing to learn but become switched off by our behaviours and attitudes.

NationalInstituteofScience&Technology (Mehrabian and Ferris 1967 quoted in Lapakko 1997) And the fact that great teachers use this to their advantage The combined effect of simultaneous verbal, vocal and facial attitude communications is a weighted sum of their independent effects –with the coefficients of 0.07, 0.38 and 0.55 respectively.
  • 12. NationalInstituteofScience&Technology The Journal of Teacher Education list the following eight overall component factors on enthusiasm training: 1. Vocal Delivery – e.g. changes in tone, pitch, speed, etc. 2. Eyes – ‘dancing, snapping, shining . . .’ etc. 3. Gestures – to include the ‘body, head, arms, hands and face’ 4. Movements – e.g. ‘large body movements’ 5. Facial Expression – e.g. expressing emotions through changes in facial expressions 6. Word Selection – e.g. colour and variety of words used 7. Acceptance of Ideas and Feelings – e.g. praise, non- threatening responses, open to ideas . . . 8. Overall Energy – ‘explosive, exuberant, high degree of vitality, drive and spirit throughout the lesson’.
