Today’s complex sustainability challenges call for a new generation of leaders and a new paradigm of leadership. Sustainability leaders and change agents need to steer their way through complex change processes in an environment that is characterised by high stakes and high uncertainty. Increasingly, leaders need to be able to facilitate participatory processes and engage a wide variety of stakeholders.
In most cases, the sustainability challenge requires engaging people in profound change, an inner shift in people’s values, aspirations and behaviours guided by their mental models, as well as an outer shift in processes, strategies and practices. Sustainability and CSR managers, change agents and facilitators need to be adept at engaging individuals and groups in a collaborative and dialogical manner, unearthing the group’s collective intelligence and assisting employees to gain a whole system perspective. Facilitating this type of transformation depends first on the authentic leadership of the facilitator.

This piece was written as a semester-long reflection of my four years spent in leadership development at Elon University. In this paper, I give my own personal definition of leadership, and describe influencing factors.
A brief discussion of why neurosciences can add to our understanding of leadership. The talk includes 6 refined insights about the brain, and includes a short example of both motivation and change management. Ultimately, those in leadership development can use these insights to better optimise our development efforts.
The knowledge of craft and processes does little to help in the day-to-day relationship with teams and clients. That's because the actual practical skills are just part of the game: there are competences that go beyond that: soft skills, sensibility, empathy, relational abilities, proactivity, etc. All of these are rarely highlighted or taught, and even less often they are used in specific tasks such as team growth or hiring.
The Hybrid Traits is an effective model to frame these additional skills, allowing us to focus on them and embed them in our professional life. It's not easy however, because everything starts from the individual's desire to practice introspection.

I would like to talk about the role of “heart” tools in our IA/UX practice. Often, our tools and methods are analytical and logic-oriented exercises. In this talk, I would like to suggest a fresh approach to our IA practice. We will explore “heart” tools and methods that are shown to be more persuasive than “head” methods – when push comes to shove.
First, we will discuss reasons heart tools have been left out, where head tools have dominated our field. These include west versus eastern philosophies, traditions, and a brief historical perspective.
We will then look at the different types of heart tools, their origins, and how these practices (often spiritual in nature) can be adapted to our IA practice, including: creative visualization, mental walkthroughs, and the practice of centeredness and connectedness.
Next, we will use real or near-real work-related examples and discuss how heart tools can be used in each situation, and how heart tools will help us get the type of results we want in our deliverables, meetings, workshops, presentations, and client relationships.
I see these ideas as a new layer on top of our current tools, and not as a replacement. Heart tools will elevate our practice to a whole new level of understanding and effectiveness, not only as IA practitioners, but also as engaged people who deeply understand and love our work, ourselves, others, and our world.
The difference between aligned and misaligned teams/organization, is the difference between average and excellent. When strategies are misaligned with culture, organizations and businesses pay extremely high price.
Aligned teams happen to be innovative, perform faster and better in the changing environment.

Gandhi, for instance, was a strictly non-violent religious and political radical. What few people know is that his inspiration for this strict non-violence was Christian anarchist Leo Tolstoy.
These slides are associated with a webinar where we discussede nonviolent religious radicalism using Tolstoy and others Christian anarchists as a starting point in order to reflect more broadly on the interaction of religion and politics, on where that leaves the intentions of secularism, and on why nonviolent activism tends to be eclipsed by violent alternatives.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
