Elements of a Vision
Visions:
 Future Oriented: Articulates the optimal desired future state
(often a not so near future)
 BIG Picture: Leaders may change, but a clearly established
Vision encourages people to focus on what's important
 Not overly general: Provides guidance and inspiration as to what
an entity (individual, organization, group, community, etc.) is
focused on achieving
 Focused on change: Functions as the "north star" – provides
guidance for every day work and helps connect daily work that
ultimately contributes to sustainable change
 Inspirational and Memorable: Makes it easy for all involved to
repeat it at any given time and provide momentum for their daily
work

Editor's Notes

  1. Different than Mission in that Visions relate to VALUES, while Missions relate to bottom line measures
  2. How can you boil this vision down to a few powerful phrases? The more you talk to people and listen to them, the clearer your vision will become. First of all, you will get some practice speaking. Whenever a person talks, they have a chance to hear their thoughts out loud; as they listen to themselves, they get clearer on what they are trying to say. Secondly, after listening to people respond to your ideas, your vision will probably change somewhat. You may want to incorporate some of their thinking into your own. Other people's ideas will help you make your vision stronger.
