Constantin Brancusi was a Romanian sculptor born in 1876. He grew up in rural Romania and learned woodcarving from a young age. He studied sculpture in Bucharest and was inspired by Rodin to move to Paris in 1904. There, he experimented with simplifying forms and materials. By 1910, he began creating ovoid sculptures which came to define his style. Brancusi sought simplicity and essence over traditional techniques. He found success but also criticism for his radical abstract works. Later in life, he continued exploring themes like birds and commissioned a temple in India to house his sculptures.
