Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, known as Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect and artist born in 1887. He was influenced by his artistic family and studied sculpture, painting, and architecture. After moving to Paris in 1917, he traveled extensively and apprenticed under other architects. His travels informed his visionary philosophy of architecture based on five principles: pilotis, free plan, roof terrace, horizontal windows, and free design. Some of his most famous works applying this philosophy include the Villa Savoye, Phillips Pavilion, and Notre Dame du Haut.
