Renewable raw materials for the BASF Verbund:
 Biogas from organic waste (e.g., kitchen waste)
 Bio-naphtha from vegetable oils and organic waste oils
International sustainability criteria are applied to feedstock
 Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
 Environmental and social responsible biomass production
 Protection of areas with high biodiversity value
 Protection of land with high carbon stocks
 New feedstocks explored and developed in line with
international sustainability standards (e.g. ISCC, RSPO,
and others according to RED) and in dialog with NGOs

Sustainability of renewable raw materials 8 Renewable raw materials for the BASF Verbund:  Biogas from organic waste (e.g., kitchen waste)  Bio-naphtha from vegetable oils and organic waste oils International sustainability criteria are applied to feedstock  Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions  Environmental and social responsible biomass production  Protection of areas with high biodiversity value  Protection of land with high carbon stocks  New feedstocks explored and developed in line with international sustainability standards (e.g. ISCC, RSPO, and others according to RED) and in dialog with NGOs
  • 9. Mass balance approach in the society A mass balance concept is used for: sugar, cocoa, juice and tea as traceability can not be completely guaranteed

Examples for biomass balanced products  Shampoo refill pack: packaging of hygiene articles in Japan (e.g. DNP)  Sandwichpanels with biomass balanced insulation foam (e.g. Falk)  Indoor paints are using biomass balanced binders (e.g. CapaGeo)  Biomass balanced polyamid for Aseptik milk packaging (e.g. SIG combiblock)  Biomass balanced polyamid for outdoor clothing (e.g. Klättermusen) Customers from various industries are buying our BMB products.

Biomass balance: Same products, clear advantages vs. other renewable building blocks Performance:  Renewable products have exactly the same performance as conventional products  Mass balance method can be applied to all products and formulations Costs:  No investments in new plants required  No re-formulation costs required  No costs for testing required  Higher costs than for conventional products Renewable content:  Renewable content can range from 25-100% for a single product Implementation:  Easy and fast implementation – it is available today  No additional work required  Lead time 6-9 months Sustainability:  Certified renewable feedstock  Full transparency and traceability
