This document discusses the pros and cons of laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty compared to open hernia repair. It notes that laparoscopic repair has limitations in recurrent or scrotal hernias. However, prospective randomized studies show that laparoscopic repair has benefits including lower recurrence rates, fewer complications, less postoperative pain, and faster return to work when performed by experienced surgeons past the learning curve. The learning curve for laparoscopic hernia repair is estimated at 30-50 cases, but resident experience may not provide enough cases to fully pass the learning curve.
