Mrs. Pierce is a teacher at Brown Barge Middle School. The school uses an unconventional curriculum model with "streams" instead of subjects and grades students on a 1-5 scale. For their final trimester, eighth grade students participate in the IMPACT stream focusing on civic responsibility. As part of this, Mrs. Pierce's class is working on several service learning projects focused on physical and mental health like fundraising for a suicide hotline and putting on health seminars.

3. What makes Brown Barge Special?

5. Students study and learn with students from other grade levels.

6. Trimesters are called “streams,” homeroom is called TOR- short for teacher of record, and grades are given on a 1-5 scale.

8. Impact At the end of their eighth grade year, students spend a trimester in a stream called IMPACT, which is what I am teaching now. The stream premise is that “we all have a personal and civic responsibility to make an impact on the world in which we live.”

9. Private Victory Students created a collage to demonstrate their personal mission statement as an IMPACT assignment.

10. Service learning project My class is the physical and mental health simulation group. Students are: working on songs to sing at a children’s hospital, collecting money to add a suicide hot line, presenting a drug and alcohol awareness seminar at lunch, and a “Nutrition Rocks” field day during physical education one day.
