1. Hematocrit (Hct) measures the percentage of red blood cells in blood after centrifugation. Blood is centrifuged to pack the red blood cells below and plasma above using centrifugal force.
2. The Hct is calculated by measuring the height of the packed red blood cell column and dividing by the total height of the blood column in a capillary tube, then multiplying by 100.
3. A normal Hct range is 36-46% for females and 40-54% for males. Factors like centrifugation speed and time can affect the Hct results if not done properly. The Hct is used to screen for anemia but hemoglobin is a more significant indicator.
