Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
The theme of my project was a true crime documentary and I was
attracted to this because I saw the new House of Gucci trailer so I
decided to research about it and I found out that there was a murder in
the family and I felt like it wasn’t really talked about enough so I
wanted to inform people about it.
What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
I researched different documentaries in Netflix and discovery plus and I
analyzed the documentaries to see how they were made. One example
is that in one of the documentaries I used, Night Stalker, they used a lot
of old photos and footage so I used old photos on the
documentary.
How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
I saw what wouldn’t work and what would work, so for example I
would’ve used re-enactments in the documentary but it would’ve
ended up a bit silly so I removed them and added background footage
of a gun while I talked
What was the outcome of the project/task?
I saw what wouldn’t work and what would work, so for example I
would’ve used re-enactments in the documentary but it would’ve
ended up a bit silly so I removed them and added background
footage of a gun while I talked
Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
How did you feel about the project before
you started?
I felt a bit scared because I didn’t even know what subject I would be
doing a documentary about and I knew that it would be challenging
to me. I knew that making the documentary would be harder to do
and I kept thinking that I should chose the print project instead
because it’s a lot easier for me to do.
What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
I think my project development worked better as I went along and I
was so scared because I chose one of the most random subjects you
could talk about and I had to find people I knew who knew about the
murder of Maurizio Gucci but luckily I did find someone and I worked
it out. Getting footage for my video was also hard but however I did
find that there was a Patrizia Reggiani interview on Discovery+ so I
used that in my documentary.
Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
Not really, I didn’t really ask for help on this project until last minute. I
did interview my grandma and that was it but everything else is just
things I did myself. I did make a survey for audience research too see
what people knew about fashion brands and true crime but that was
it.
How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
I felt so relived because as I was making this throughout the weeks I
slowly started to hate it but that happens with every single project I
do. However the documentary I like a bit but it wasn’t something I
was expecting in my head but it still works. The biggest problem I hate
with it was my voice over I hate it so much but the background
footage worked out really well.
Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
The good points while making the documentary was the vhs effect
footage, it worked really well with the aesthetic and it was nice as
background for my voice over and patrizia reggiani interview. Another
good thing was my edited images I used. They all look like they were
taken by a polaroid and have that orange tint that comes with it.
Another good thing was my interview. My grandma was very
proffesional about it and she did well.
What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
My biggest challenge was trying to move things around from my
computer to one drive and every time I moved a file around it would
corrupt it and wouldn’t load properly. I fixed this by uploading my
documentary to YouTube and put that on my wix. Another challenge
was trying to find the patrizia reggiani interview and I was looking
everywhere for it and when I eventually found it I had to pay for a
discovery+ subscription in which I payed, recorded some footage and
got a refund. Another challenge was my interview because I couldn’t
find someone who knew about it but my grandma popped up saying
that she’s watched the Patrizia Reggiani interview and knew about it.
What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
• The negative points were that I chose the most random subject to do
and slowly started to hate it but I just carried on with it and
researched more about what happened in that family. Another thing
was my voice over, my nose was stuffy and my throat was dry
because my house is too dry that it makes my nose itchy so I sounded
not very good, I drank a lot of water to try and improve it. Another
thing with my voice over was that I messed up so many times so what
I did was I didn’t rerecord I just repeated the same thing over and
over again and chose the best way I said it.
How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
Satisfactory. I don’t know if this is because I’m biased because I low key
hate it or because it might jus be satisfactory. However I’m happy that
I did it and watch the new movie about it, House of Gucci so I can see
what I missed out of.
What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
My final piece was a nightmare to make but I did like the background
footage. I actually shot everything with my phone on this app called
pro take and it had a portrait mode and it allowed to focus on one
object and blur everything else which I liked, sometimes it would
glitch when I was filming the gun but however it added more into the
vhs old effect I was aiming for so it worked out really well.
How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the medium you worked in?
I think it did well because of the polaroid pictures and vhs style
footage. It makes it look old so it adds to the aesthetic I was aiming
for. I needed this to stand out from the rest while also making it seem
like a documentary and not a random video. It also adds suspence
and the Patrizia Reggiani interview made it so much better because
she did not care about killing her ex husband which makes this
documentary a lot scarier.
How did you design apeal to your target
audience?
I made it so it looked old and retro as when the inncident happened it
was like in the 90’s. People like old things so when I did this I made
sure almost everything on it was old. The aesthetic of the
documentary was yellowish tinted to make sure it has that old dusty
discolored look throughout it.
Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
In what ways was the overall project a
success?
The Vhs and polaroid looks in the video and photos because they
actually look good and fit in with the theme. The Patrizia Reggiani
interview was really good because it just fit in so well and her actions
and the way she describes her story just makes the documentary a lot
more scary because she literally murdered her ex husband and does
not care.
What elements did not go well and why?
I tried to put a text aesthetic in but it didn’t really work out because
they all looked out of place so I tried not putting anywhere that felt
out of place. The only text that appears is at the end and it has the
Gucci colour scheme of red and green. Another thing was the whole
documentary felt very fast paced to me so I should’ve made it slower.
How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
I learned how to organize things better because I’m not a very
organized person and I’m terrible with time management so I try my
best to stick through it. Communication isn’t my best skill because I
never ask for help for anything and by asking for help would solve a
lot more problems for me.
What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
I wanted to make an eerie atmosphere in the documentary like you
know something bad will happen at the end but you don’t know
when it’ll happen. I think I did okay in it, it wasn’t exactly the thing
you’d be on the edge of your seat of but it did make a bit of suspense
because you don’t know when it’ll hit Maurizio.
What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
The feedback I got was better than I expected because I thought I did
terrible but turns out it’s a lot better than I thought. Their reactions
were “Ellie it’s not as bad as you think” so that gave me a lot more
confidence in my own work.
What would you do differently in the future
and why?
I would get cameras from college and all the kit I need from college and
not use things I have already as most of them might not even be that
good. With all the equipment it would make a higher quality
documentary. I would also plan ahead more as this project to me felt
improvised.
What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from
academic literature and professionals has helped and why?
I have gained the knowledge to not pick the most random subjects and
chose subjects that you already have experience from and you can
build it from there. Professionals taught me how to do most things
and because I'm a visual learner it’s easier for me to follow, so if they
make a tutorial about how to do something then I can navigate
around the software easier.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
I would plan ahead a lot more and have more time do edit my video. I
would also use actual cameras instead of my phone. I did everything
on my phone and if I do something like this again I won’t use my
phone as much and use other softwares and cameras.
How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
I could set myself random projects like make logos or try and make a
video editing project like make a short film or make a trailer. Build up
these skills and maybe even get clients to pay you for your work. I
could also go to university and do a media related course and build
my skills from there.
What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
Plan ahead properly of what I’m going to do, how I’m going to do it and
when I’m going to do it so I can manage my time properly and focus
on my work. Set up a time where I feel focused the most and do the
work for as long as I can and have breaks inbetween so I don’t
constantly feel exhausted.
