If you still haven't heard of it, there is a new star in JVM sky - Kotlin. This short presentation will serve as intro for those who wan't to hear what's all the fuss about and dive deeper into this new alternative to Java
Google is adding Kotlin as an official programming language for Android development. Kotlin is a language that runs on the JVM and has full interoperability with Java. It costs nothing to adopt! I will show some cool features of Kotlin, how it makes developing with Android easy and finally we'll see what happens under the hood when we write in Kotlin.
Introduction to Kotlin Language and its application to Android platformEastBanc Tachnologies
Author: Oleg Godovykh, eastbanctech.com
Kotlin is a new programming language built by Jetbrains and is a new member of JVM family. As opposed to typical reason to introduce some new language, Kotlin main goal isn't to create new paradigm or fill a new niche, but to make routine tasks much easier and safer. Kotlin gains popularity across Android developer community, and in this presentation it is shown how Kotlin usage can dramatically simplify typical mobile app development.

This tutorial by Simplilearn is based on Kotlin In-Depth Tutorial for 2022. This video is curated by industry experts based on the current IT standards and organized in the learning order. This Kotlin tutorial will help you with the fundamentals of kotlin programming language and also Android development with kotlin. This kotlin tutorial will guide you with critical skills, tips, and tricks required to be an expert in kotlin programming language.
In this tutorial, on the Kotlin tutorial, we will be learning about the important topics and basics of Kotlin language that one should know to understand Kotlin language. In this Kotlin tutorial for beginners, we will be learning about the Variables in Kotlin, String templates, if-else, and when statements. We will also learn about arrays, loops, ranges, and much more with help of hands-on examples.
Composition is a fundamental principle of functional programming, but how is it different from an object-oriented approach, and how do you use it in practice?
In this talk for beginners, we'll start by going over the basic concepts of functional programming, and then look at some different ways that composition can be used to build large things from small things.
After that, we'll see how composition is used in practice, beginning with a simple FizzBuzz example, and ending with a complete (object-free!) web application.
With the announcement on officially supporting Kotlin for Android, this presentation tries to compare Java and Kotlin to encourage people to switch to Kotlin
Kotlin is a new programming language for Android App development and it is discovered by Google.It will be an alternate option in place of Java language for android app development.

Python is a high level language focused on readability. The Python community developed the concept of "Pythonic Code", requiring not only semantic correctness, but also conformity to universally acknowledged stylistic criteria.
A pre-requisite to write pythonic code is to write idiomatic code. Using the right idioms is a matter of acquired taste and experience, however, some idioms are quite easy to learn.
This presentation focuses on some of these idioms and other stylistic criteria:
* for vs. while
* iterators, itertools
* code conventions (space invaders)
* avoid default values bugs
* first order functions
* internal/external iterators
* substituting the switch statement
* properties, attributes, read only objects
* named tuples
* duck typings
* bits of metaprogramming
* exception management: LBYL vs. EAFP
Oh Crap, I Forgot (Or Never Learned) C! [CodeMash 2010]Chris Adamson
Abstract: Chances are you code in a language that's either descended from C, inspired by C, or run in an interpreter that itself is written in C. Still... do you actually know how to code in C? Despite its long-standing position as a sort of "lingua franca", an agreed-upon common language, more and more developers are putting together successful, satisfying careers, without ever learning this seminal language. But what if you have to call into C code from your favorite scripting language, or use APIs like OpenGL that are written to be called from C? Many developers find C very challenging, particularly its manual memory-management and other low-level concerns. In this session, we'll show you why you shouldn't be afraid of C, how you can use the skills you already have from the languages you code in today, and how to master structs, enums, typedefs, malloc(), free(), and the rest of C's sharp edges. Examples will be from the point-of-view of the C-skewing iPhone SDK, but will be designed to be broadly applicable and platform-agnostic.
After 10 years of Object Orientated Java, 2 years of Functional Programming in Scala was enough to convince me that I could never switch back. But why? The answer is simple: Functional Scala lets you think less. It reduces the number of moving parts you need to hold in your head, lets you stay focussed and saves your mental stack from overflowing.
In this talk I'll show you how to stop treating Scala as a better Java and start exploring the world of Functional Programming. I'll use code examples to demonstrate a four step path that'll let you ease yourself into the world of Functional Programming while continuing to deliver production quality code.
With each step we'll learn a new technique, and understand how it leaves you with less to think about: Hopefully this talk will convince you that Functional Scala leads to code that's easier to hold in your head, and leave you excited about learning a new paradigm.
The Kotlin 101 presentation was the very first presentation of the Kotlin Usergroup Vienna (https://www.meetup.com/Kotlin-Vienna/), held at a meeting from the Java Student Usergroup in 2016 (https://www.meetup.com/Java-Vienna/). It explains the raw (syntactical) fundamentals of the language targeting a Java developer audience.
Presentation for Android Developers about why they should consider using Kotlin. Key features of the language are discussed in comparison with Java. #LanguageChoiceMatters

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
