Python is a high level language focused on readability. The Python community developed the concept of "Pythonic Code", requiring not only semantic correctness, but also conformity to universally acknowledged stylistic criteria.
A pre-requisite to write pythonic code is to write idiomatic code. Using the right idioms is a matter of acquired taste and experience, however, some idioms are quite easy to learn.
This presentation focuses on some of these idioms and other stylistic criteria:
* for vs. while
* iterators, itertools
* code conventions (space invaders)
* avoid default values bugs
* first order functions
* internal/external iterators
* substituting the switch statement
* properties, attributes, read only objects
* named tuples
* duck typings
* bits of metaprogramming
* exception management: LBYL vs. EAFP
The presentation shows major features of the new C++ standard (language and the library). The full list of new things is very broad, so I've categorized them to be easier to understand.
Declarative Type System Specification with StatixEelco Visser
In this talk I present the design of Statix, a new constraint-based language for the executable specification of type systems. Statix specifications consist of predicates that define the well-formedness of language constructs in terms of built-in and user-defined constraints. Statix has a declarative semantics that defines whether a model satisfies a constraint. The operational semantics of Statix is defined as a sound constraint solving algorithm that searches for a solution for a constraint. The aim of the design is that Statix users can ignore the execution order of constraint solving and think in terms of the declarative semantics.
A distinctive feature of Statix is its use of scope graphs, a language parametric framework for the representation and querying of the name binding facts in programs. Since types depend on name resolution and name resolution may depend on types, it is typically not possible to construct the entire scope graph of a program before type constraint resolution. In (algorithmic) type system specifications this leads to explicit staging of the construction and querying of the type environment (class table, symbol table). Statix automatically stages the construction of the scope graph of a program such that queries are never executed when their answers may be affected by future scope graph extension. In the talk, I will explain the design of Statix by means of examples.

Not long ago, adaptations of visual novels were a major inspiration for anime, with a dozen or more shows a year based on VNs. These include classics like Clannad, Fate/Stay Night, and Higurashi. Today, the flood has slowed to a trickle, with only six VN anime in 2017, all of them commercial flops. This panel will track the rise and fall of VN adaptations, the traits that make them good and bad for anime, and whether this year's Steins;Gate 0 represents a new hope for the genre or a last gasp.

As much as we love Swift for developing our apps, playgrounds, and even on the server, there are some things for which Swift is not a good match. The media frameworks on iOS are a good example of this. Dropping into Core Audio can twist your Swift code so badly it’s hardly readable anymore. And there are parts of AV Foundation where using Swift is literally not allowed.
In this talk, we’ll show off some of these tricky scenarios, see what we can do to make things better, and think about what this means for the Swift language and its future prospects.

Firebase's primary offering is a realtime database in the cloud that syncs changes to and from multiple concurrent users, and their Swift-friendly iOS SDK makes it ideal for mobile use. But even if you're not writing the next Final Cut Pro or Photoshop, it's easy to call in Core Image for simple tasks, like putting a blur in part of your UI for transitions or privacy reasons. Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
