Cloud-based augmentation for mobile devices: Motivation, Taxonomy, and Open C...Saeid Abolfazli
Comprehensive Survey on Mobile Cloud Computing. The paper abstract is here:
Recently, Cloud-based Mobile Augmentation (CMA) approaches have gained remarkable ground from academia and industry. CMA is the state-of-the-art mobile augmentation model that employs resource-rich clouds to increase, enhance, and optimize computing capabilities of mobile devices aiming at execution of resource-intensive mobile applications. Augmented mobile devices envision to perform extensive computations and to store big data beyond their intrinsic capabilities with least footprint and vulnerability. Researchers utilize varied cloud-based computing resources (e.g., distant clouds and nearby mobile nodes) to meet various computing requirements of mobile users. However, employing cloud-based computing resources is not a straightforward panacea. Comprehending critical factors (e.g., current state of mobile client and remote resources) that impact on augmentation process and optimum selection of cloud-based resource types are some challenges that hinder CMA adaptability. This paper comprehensively surveys the mobile augmentation domain and presents taxonomy of CMA approaches. The objectives of this study is to highlight the effects of remote resources on the quality and reliability of augmentation processes and discuss the challenges and opportunities of employing varied cloud-based resources in augmenting mobile devices. We present augmentation definition, motivation, and taxonomy of augmentation types, including traditional and cloud-based. We critically analyze the state-of-the-art CMA approaches and classify them into four groups of distant fixed, proximate fixed, proximate mobile, and hybrid to present a taxonomy. Vital decision making and performance limitation factors that influence on the adoption of CMA approaches are introduced and an exemplary decision making flowchart for future CMA approaches are presented. Impacts of CMA approaches on mobile computing is discussed and open challenges are presented as the future research directions.

Towards the extinction of mega data centres? To which extent should the Clou...Thierry Coupaye
Keynote by Thierry Coupaye at the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Networking, Niagara Falls, Canada, October 2015.
Summary: Cloud computing emerged, a decade or so ago, from underused computing and storage ressources in Internet players mega data centres that were thought to be provided "as a service". As a result of this inception, Cloud is often considered as a synonym for massive data center, which somehow fuels a very centralised vision of (cloud) computing and storage provision. However, we might be at a time in which the pendulum begins to swing back. Indeed, several initiatives are emerging around a vision of more geographically distributed clouds where computing and storage resources are made available at the edge of the network, close to users, in complement or replacement of massive remote data centres. This presentation discusses, through some examples, the evolution of cloud architectures towards more distribution, the signs and stakes of these mutations.
Midokura OpenStack Day Korea Talk: MidoNet Open Source Network Virtualization...Dan Mihai Dumitriu
OpenStack deployments for public or private clouds require overlay networking. Due to the scale and rate of change of virtual resources, it isn't practical to rely on traditional network constructs and isolation mechanims. Today's deployments require performance, resilience, and high availability to be considered truly production-ready. In this session, we deep dive into the MidoNet architecture, and process of sending a data packet across an OpenStack environment through a network overlay. A distributed architecture implements logical constructs that are used to build networks without a single point of failure, all while adding network functionality in a highly-scalable manner. Network functions are applied in a single virtual hop. By applying network services right at the ingress host, the network is free from unnecessary clogging and bottlenecks by avoiding additional hops. Packets reach their destination more efficiently with the single virtual hop. After this session, the audience will understand how distributed architectures allow efficient networking with routing decisions and network services applied at the edge. Also, the audience will understand how it is easier to scale clouds when the network intelligence is distributed.
Shaun Walsh digs into some key differences between industry acronyms that is causing confusion in the industry – aka ‘acronym soup.’ Everything from network fabric virtualization (NFV), to software defined networking (SDN), to overlay networking (OVN) to virtual network functions (VNF). He breaks through the confusion, explains the differences and the similarities between some of these industry terms, as well as how Emulex fits into the mix.

Multicloud as the Next Generation of Cloud Infrastructure Brad Eckert
So, what are data center networks really built for? Short answer "applications".
Whether it is a public cloud provider, private enterprise, FSI or telco cloud - the nature of applications across each data center type impose a different set of demands on the underlying network infrastructure. A next-generation architecture is one that is versatile yet modular enough to address these different application needs, whether these are HPC and Big Data, legacy or real-time content. A common architecture goal is for a unified and consolidated network design that can leverage standardized technology attributes and can integrate a versatile workload environment be it high-performance bare metal servers to a microservices enabled container environment. This tutorial is aimed at an in-depth structured understanding of data center business and technical requirements and how EVPN-VXLAN constructs serve as a swiss-knife approach to achieve the same. Practical case study examples that translate theoretical concepts into building blocks for designing and automating multi-tenant data center deployments. Explore how a unified technology solution can help build a network that grows with increasing east-west traffic, seamlessly connects with the backbone for north-south communication while leveraging familiar protocol concepts to achieve security insertion. We will also go over operator issues with traffic optimization, multicast and BUM traffic handling and other common pitfalls. A final step would be to define requirements for a cohesive solution using a centralized controller that enables a data center network operator to leverage the same degree of agility and visibility for both the physical network and the application infrastructure to truly build a software-defined data center.
The lessons I learned is that Open source quickly becomes the natural choice wherever commoditization is happening in the software stack. Thus we expect business-to-business open source, which is already a significant trend in recent history, to become an increasingly common form of open source collaboration. Companies who understand the ground rules of business-to-business open source will be better positioned to identify and take advantage of open source opportunities in the competitive spaces that they share with other companies.
So I will share why open strategy is import for the enterprise. And how to do contributions for the open source projects n today’s topic.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
