Summary: Cloud computing emerged, a decade or so ago, from underused computing and storage ressources in Internet players mega data centres that were thought to be provided "as a service". As a result of this inception, Cloud is often considered as a synonym for massive data center, which somehow fuels a very centralised vision of (cloud) computing and storage provision. However, we might be at a time in which the pendulum begins to swing back. Indeed, several initiatives are emerging around a vision of more geographically distributed clouds where computing and storage resources are made available at the edge of the network, close to users, in complement or replacement of massive remote data centres. This presentation discusses, through some examples, the evolution of cloud architectures towards more distribution, the signs and stakes of these mutations.

License-exempt spectrum bands make it possible for operators who do not have access to licensed spectrum to deploy wireless broadband networks. Traditionally vendors have developed specific solutions for license-exempt operators, often based on proprietary technology that limits the flexibility and upgradability of their networks.
With Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16e WiMAX, license-exempt operators have access to the most advanced wireless broadband technology on the market today and can take advantage of the same performance, ecosystem, and volume of scale that incumbent, nationwide wireless operators with licensed-spectrum can.
While often positioned as a mobile broadband technology that operates in licensed bands, 802.16e WiMAX can also support fixed and nomadic services, and vertical applications in a range of frequencies up to 6 GHz, including license-exempt bands such as the 5.x GHz band and, in the US, the lightly licensed 3.65 GHz band.
As 802.16e WiMAX products for license-exempt bands are introduced in the market, operators need to know what the value proposition of using 802.16e WiMAX compared to alternative solutions is. How do they stand to gain from a technology that was developed to support mobility? Do they need the extra features that 802.16e WiMAX offers?

Network cameras and other edge devices are collecting ever-more video – far more than can be economically transported to the cloud. This argues for putting intelligence in edge devices. But the cloud offers unique, valuable capabilities, such as aggregating information from multiple cameras, applying state-of-the-art algorithms, and providing users with access to their data anywhere, any time.
Camio uses a combination of machine learning at the edge (in network cameras and network video recorders) and in the cloud to generate alerts, highlight the most significant events captured by a camera, and to let users search for events of interest. In this talk, Maslan explores the trade-offs between edge and cloud processing for systems that extract meaning from video, and explains how the two approaches can be combined to create big opportunities.

So, what are data center networks really built for? Short answer "applications".
Whether it is a public cloud provider, private enterprise, FSI or telco cloud - the nature of applications across each data center type impose a different set of demands on the underlying network infrastructure. A next-generation architecture is one that is versatile yet modular enough to address these different application needs, whether these are HPC and Big Data, legacy or real-time content. A common architecture goal is for a unified and consolidated network design that can leverage standardized technology attributes and can integrate a versatile workload environment be it high-performance bare metal servers to a microservices enabled container environment. This tutorial is aimed at an in-depth structured understanding of data center business and technical requirements and how EVPN-VXLAN constructs serve as a swiss-knife approach to achieve the same. Practical case study examples that translate theoretical concepts into building blocks for designing and automating multi-tenant data center deployments. Explore how a unified technology solution can help build a network that grows with increasing east-west traffic, seamlessly connects with the backbone for north-south communication while leveraging familiar protocol concepts to achieve security insertion. We will also go over operator issues with traffic optimization, multicast and BUM traffic handling and other common pitfalls. A final step would be to define requirements for a cohesive solution using a centralized controller that enables a data center network operator to leverage the same degree of agility and visibility for both the physical network and the application infrastructure to truly build a software-defined data center.
What is Your Edge From the Cloud to the Edge, Extending Your ReachSUSE
As companies continue to take advantage of the benefits of cloud – increased flexibility, speed of innovation and quickly responding to business demands, it is no wonder that they want to extend these benefits to the edge. But there are still a lot of questions.
According to a new Gartner report1, “Around 10% of enterprise-generated data is created and processed outside a traditional centralized data center or cloud. By 2022, Gartner predicts this
figure will reach 75%”. In addition to hosting new 5G era services, the other major network operator driver for edge compute and edge clouds is deploying virtualized network infrastructure, replacing many dedicated hardware-based elements with virtual network functions (VNFs) running on general purpose edge compute. Even portions of access networks are being virtualized, and many of these functions need to be deployed close to end users. The combination of these infrastructure and applications drivers is a major reason that so much of 5G era network transformation resolves around edge cloud distribution.

"Walking through the fog (computing): trends, use-cases and open issues"
Despite its huge success in many IT-enabled application scenarios, cloud computing has demonstrated some intrinsic limitations that may severely limit its adoption in several contexts where constraints like e.g. preserving data locally, ensuring real-time reactivity or guaranteeing operation continuity despite lack of Internet connectivity (or a combination of them) are mandatory. These distinguishing requirements fostered an increased interest toward computing approaches that inherit the flexibility and adaptability of the cloud paradigm, while acting in proximity of a specific scenario. As a consequence, the emergence of this “proximity computing” approach has exploded into a plethora of architectural solutions (and novel terms) like fog computing, edge computing, dew computing, mist computing but also cloudlets, mobile cloud computing, mobile edge computing (and probably few others I may not be aware of…). The talk will initially make an attempt to introduce some clarity among these “foggy” definitions by proposing a taxonomy whose aim is to help identifying their peculiarities as well as their overlaps. Afterwards, the most important components of a generalized proximity computing architecture will be explained, followed by the description of few research works and use cases investigated within our Center and based on this emerging paradigm. An overview of open issues and interesting research directions will conclude the talk.

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
