Parasurama, an avatar of Mahavishnu, threw his axe into the sea, creating the land of Kerala. After killing oppressive rulers, he handed over the land to Brahmins as penance. He threw his axe northward from Kanyakumari, where it landed and formed Kerala. Kerala has a tropical climate and its coast runs along the western Ghats. Major seasons include the monsoon from June to September and winter from November to February. Kerala is known for its spices, rice, seafood, and dishes like appam and kappa. Major festivals celebrated in Kerala are Onam in August/September, Vishu in April, Christmas in December, and Ramadan for Muslims.
