Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was a Spanish nobleman and conquistador who explored the southwestern part of what is now the United States in the 1500s. He was the first European to travel up the Rio Grande and explore the Grand Canyon, and discovered many Indian settlements. His expeditions gave the Spanish valuable geographic knowledge of the region, though he did not find the fabled Seven Golden Cities of Cibola he had been seeking.
