Francisco Vasquez De Coronado was a Spanish explorer born in 1510 who led an expedition from 1540-1542 through Mexico and the southwestern United States in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Gold, becoming one of the first Europeans to travel up the Rio Grande River and discover the Grand Canyon, though he found no gold or silver and made no permanent Spanish settlements.
