Developing National Repository Of Child Health Information For India Anil M...Anil Mishra
India faces an enormous challenge in the area of child survival. The Government and different non-government organizations have undertaken various initiatives to improve the status of Child Health in the country and this has generated an abundant resource of valuable information. However this information lies scattered and is often inaccessible to the public and other stakeholders.
Efficient management of ‘health information’ is imperative for informed decision making and for attaining effective programmatic outcomes. Digital repositories have nowadays become the preferred source of information management. This paper describes the development of a digital repository of information on child health developed by the National Child Health Resource Centre at the National Institute of Health & Family Welfare, Delhi, using the open source content management system Drupal. This repository has been developed as a comprehensive source of information on child health and related maternal health.

Each subsequent OppiaMobile app is developed as part of an evolving global system that supports thoughtful creation, curation, packaging and distribution of health-related content for health workers. With each subsequent adaptation of the OppiaMobile platform, CCP expands its ability to design and develop, sustainable context-specific job aids and BCC tools for frontline health workers and their clients.

Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the structure and function of taste buds.
Describe the relationship between the taste threshold and taste index of common substances.
Explain the chemical basis and signal transduction of taste perception for each type of primary taste sensation.
Recognize different abnormalities of taste perception and their causes.
Key Topics:
Significance of Taste Sensation:
Differentiation between pleasant and harmful food
Influence on behavior
Selection of food based on metabolic needs
Receptors of Taste:
Taste buds on the tongue
Influence of sense of smell, texture of food, and pain stimulation (e.g., by pepper)
Primary and Secondary Taste Sensations:
Primary taste sensations: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Umami
Chemical basis and signal transduction mechanisms for each taste
Taste Threshold and Index:
Taste threshold values for Sweet (sucrose), Salty (NaCl), Sour (HCl), and Bitter (Quinine)
Taste index relationship: Inversely proportional to taste threshold
Taste Blindness:
Inability to taste certain substances, particularly thiourea compounds
Example: Phenylthiocarbamide
Structure and Function of Taste Buds:
Composition: Epithelial cells, Sustentacular/Supporting cells, Taste cells, Basal cells
Features: Taste pores, Taste hairs/microvilli, and Taste nerve fibers
Location of Taste Buds:
Found in papillae of the tongue (Fungiform, Circumvallate, Foliate)
Also present on the palate, tonsillar pillars, epiglottis, and proximal esophagus
Mechanism of Taste Stimulation:
Interaction of taste substances with receptors on microvilli
Signal transduction pathways for Umami, Sweet, Bitter, Sour, and Salty tastes
Taste Sensitivity and Adaptation:
Decrease in sensitivity with age
Rapid adaptation of taste sensation
Role of Saliva in Taste:
Dissolution of tastants to reach receptors
Washing away the stimulus
Taste Preferences and Aversions:
Mechanisms behind taste preference and aversion
Influence of receptors and neural pathways
Impact of Sensory Nerve Damage:
Degeneration of taste buds if the sensory nerve fiber is cut
Abnormalities of Taste Detection:
Conditions: Ageusia, Hypogeusia, Dysgeusia (parageusia)
Causes: Nerve damage, neurological disorders, infections, poor oral hygiene, adverse drug effects, deficiencies, aging, tobacco use, altered neurotransmitter levels
Neurotransmitters and Taste Threshold:
Effects of serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) on taste sensitivity
Supertasters:
25% of the population with heightened sensitivity to taste, especially bitterness
Increased number of fungiform papillae

The new Photoshare site is an exciting achievement because of new features it offers.Improved design and for requesting and sharing imagesSubmissions are now accepted from individual photographers and organizations. Plus, it offers:QuickUser profiles and login,New search display with thumbnail view,Faceted search for filtering and refining search results,Image light boxes,Updated forms and request processes,Improved access to images and order tracking,Faster processing of requests,Photo upload functionality for contributors,Improved interface for monitoring the impact and use of shared images

Toolkits are practical collections of trusted public health resources, chosen by experts, arranged for easy use. Here’s an example of our pre-service education toolkit recently released.
The new toolkit design features include: a color picker with a set of six color options, vertical navigation menu, custom header and footer, and custom information blocks. These new features were implemented into the Toolkit Application to enhance the platform, improve the usability, and offer more customization.Models: Model 1: Technical Working Groups collaboratively select the most practical tools for health professionals to adapt and use on a specific topic. This model is appropriate when collaborating on major topics like Implants.Model 2: Capturing knowledge from projects that end or are ending, such as ACCESS – FP – postpartum family planning. Or converting Web sites that are becoming outdated such as Postabortion, FP/HIV, Elements of FP success, and others. Model 3: Working groups from across sectors organize information quickly to respond to a crisis. For example, after the earthquake in Haiti, K4Health quickly called for collaborating organizations to developed the Haiti Relief Toolkit. Response was quick and the toolkit was developed within a week. The toolkit remains one of the most popular sections on the K4Health site.Model 4: Local creation of Toolkits: As we’ll show in the case of Malawi, this model takes existing toolkits that are developed at the global level and adapted to country-specific experiences.
Here’s an example of our upcoming Banlgadesh toolkit. Other published toolkits include: Knowledge Management for Health and Development Toolkit, IGWG Gender and Health, HTSP: Healthy Timing and Spacing of Pregnancy, and mHealthTo view our toolkits, visit www.k4health.org/toolkits
