This document discusses community involvement strategies that were used in Nigeria to improve polio vaccination rates, particularly in northern Nigeria. It outlines approaches used like engaging traditional leaders, women's groups, and religious leaders to identify missed children and track vaccination status. Data shows improvements in routine vaccination coverage from 2005 to 2010 and reductions in the number of missed children and non-compliant settlements during vaccination campaigns in 2011 when these community strategies were utilized. Preliminary results demonstrated reaching more special populations and timely routine immunization.

Trend of children immunized with OPV during IPD Rounds by month in Sokoto State (Jan – Mar 2011) Note: Field reports showed vaccine shortage during Immunization Plus Days (IPDs) in January, resulting in lower coverage compared to February and March. However, the state has been immunizing children above target ( 857,167 estimated children < five in 2011) in every IPD round since the beginning of the year.
