Health effects of colour additives

Without color additives, colas wouldn’t be brown, margarine wouldn’t be yellow, and mint ice cream wouldn’t be green. Here at the FDA, we’re committed to making sure the color additives in your food are safe. Color additives are used in foods to: Offset color loss due to exposure to light, air, temperature extremes, moisture, or storage conditions Make natural variations in color look more uniform Enhance colors that occur naturally Provide color to colorless and “fun” foods, like those brightly colored popsicles that are perfect for beating the summer heat. The FDA regulates color additives used in food and dietary supplements marketed in the United States. FDA is responsible for making sure all foods containing color additives are safe for consumption, contain only approved ingredients, and are properly labeled. So how do we ensure that these colors are safe? First of all, the FDA uses the best science available to determine whether there is “a reasonable certainty of no harm” to consumers when the color additive is used properly (at its intended level and for its intended purpose). When the FDA approves a color additive, the Agency issues strict requirements for it. Among other things, these requirements specify : The types of foods in which it can be used The maximum amounts allowed to be used How it should be identified on the food label.

This document summarizes Satoshi Ogawa's research on identifying ideal rice root systems to improve water and nitrogen uptake under stress conditions. It discusses how the DRO1 gene enables deeper rooting and improved grain yield under drought. Field experiments show that a dimorphic root system contributes to higher nitrogen use efficiency and grain yield under nitrogen deficiency compared to monomorphic roots. Quantitative trait loci analysis identified root trait QTLs from Oryza rufipogon, including several co-locating QTLs for root traits and nitrogen deficiency tolerance on chromosome 1. The goal is to develop an ideal root system through QTL pyramiding to enhance water and nitrogen use efficiency in rice.

Giving soil a voice: key messaging and pitching

How to develop key messages and pitches to give soil a voice. During this session we focused on how to prepare and deliver a “pitch” to reach specific target audiences. The objectives included building the capacity to communicate research, key messages, and recommendations more effectively, and to enable participants to walk away with a short message about their work and know exactly what they are asking of their listener.

Turmeric is commonly used as a spice in cooking and has many potential health benefits. It contains curcumin and other curcuminoids that act as powerful antioxidants and may help treat arthritis, cancer, liver and heart conditions. Curcumin can reduce inflammation, break down amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's, and help treat depression by modulating neurotransmitters. Turmeric is generally well tolerated but high doses may cause side effects like bleeding risk when combined with blood thinners or hypoglycemia. More research is still needed on its mechanisms and effectiveness for various diseases.

Building Capacity to Integrate Gender into International Extension Programs

Georgia—Not Following the Crowd

Georgia has substantially increased funding for its Ministry of Agriculture since 2011 and improved its policy environment through 2012 parliamentary elections. In 2013, the Ministry of Agriculture established a public extension system with 245 specialists dispersed to 54 field offices. While progress has been made, extension specialists in the field offices have many responsibilities beyond farmer education. There are also concerns about specialists serving both educational and regulatory roles winning farmers' trust. Georgia currently has laws preventing the extension network from charging fees for services.

Along the Policy Path: Reviewing Ghana’s Agricultural Extension Policy

Delivering the Farmbook Suite: Review of MEAS Pilot Project in Kenya

Farmbook Suite is a set of three ICT tools - Map & Track, e-Learning curriculum, and e-Biz Planner - being piloted in Kenya to strengthen extension services. The goal is to assess the impact of training extension agents and farmers on livelihoods and productivity. Preliminary results found the tools were well-received by agents but challenges included a lack of devices, funds for agent training, and license costs. Counties expressed interest in using Farmbook for registration, tracking service delivery, and developing business plans with farmers.
