The Israelites encamped at Gilgal and celebrated Passover. They had recently been circumcised and were now having religious services. Joshua saw a man by Jericho with his sword drawn who identified himself as the captain of the Lord's host. Joshua worshipped him and asked what the Lord commanded. The captain instructed Joshua to remove his sandals as he was standing on holy ground. God would lead the battle for Jericho.
