John Stuart Mill was a British philosopher who developed the theory of utilitarianism. He was educated entirely by his father James Mill through a rigorous system focused solely on the intellect. As a result, Mill's emotional development was neglected. In his 20s, Mill experienced a mental health crisis but eventually recovered. He went on to write extensively on political theory, ethics and logic, advocating for women's suffrage and other reforms. Mill argued that morality should be based on producing the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Actions are right if they promote happiness and wrong if they produce unhappiness.
