Born in 1806 in London, John Stuart Mill was a British philosopher, political economist, and civil servant. He made contributions to social theory, political theory, and political economy. He began studying Greek at age 3, Latin at age 8, and was introduced to political economy at age 13, studying Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Among his major works were On Liberty, Utilitarianism, and Principles of Political Economy.
