John Stuart Mill was a British philosopher who developed the theory of utilitarianism. He was educated entirely by his father James Mill through a rigorous system focused solely on the intellect. As a result, Mill's emotional development was neglected. In later life, Mill recognized the faults with this system. Mill went on to write extensively on political philosophy and ethics, advocating for social reforms like women's suffrage. He argued that morality is based on producing the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Actions are right if they promote happiness and wrong if they produce unhappiness.
