Introduction to the housekeeping
department
What is Housekeeping?
Housekeeping refers to the management of
duties and chores involved in the running of
a hotel, such as cleaning,
maintenance, shopping and bill pay. These
tasks may be performed by the hotel members,
or by other persons hired to perform these
tasks.
Hierarchy Of A Housekeeping
Department
Floor Supervisor
Floor Supervisor will be responsible for
maintaining guestrooms, working areas, and the
hotel premises in general in a clean and orderly
manner. Also coordinating daily housekeeping
operations and maintaining the housekeeping
operating standards.
They are also responsible for supervising room
attendants to deliver an excellent Guest
satisfaction and experience. On time to time basis
may also be required to assist the Housekeeping
Manager in various activities.
Duties and Responsibilities of Floor
supervisor
 Responsible for smooth operation of the floor assigned.
 Responsible for the performance of floor boys.
 Supervise Room Attendants
 Organizes and facilitates the room making process.
 Daily allocation of rooms and deep cleaning tasks to team
members.
 Responsible for the cleanliness of guest rooms, corridors and
heart of the house area of the floor.
 Checks the occupied and departure rooms, giving special
attention to guest needs.
 Ensures that the entire operation is performed as per the laid
down standards.
 To organize immediately the guest needs under intimation to
EHK/Executive.
 Manage guest requests, including VIP amenities and
communicating them to the relevant team members

 Routine inspection of guest bedrooms to ensure they meet
standards.
 Aware of all room categories and amenities.
 Achieve positive outcomes from guest queries in a timely
and efficient manner
 Carry out lost and found procedures.
 Report maintenance issues to Maintenance/Engineering
Department.
 Assist Housekeeping Manager with training requirements.
 Represent the needs of the team to others in the hotel.
 Comply with hotel security, fire regulations and all health
and safety legislation.
 Assist other departments wherever necessary and
maintain good working relationships.
Public Area Supervisor
A Public Area Supervisor is responsible for all
public areas, including lobby, restaurants,
lounges, executive offices, pool area, public
washrooms, garden areas, corridors, pathway,
banquets, perimeter of hotel, heart of the
house corridors, locker rooms, staircases etc.
Duties and Responsibilities of Public Area
Supervisor
 1. Support and follow company policies, legal requirements, and guidelines of the
Collective Bargaining Agreement.
 2. Provide the direction for a positive, empowering work environment by setting
the example and consistency of day to day work habits.
 3. Manage all department functions including short and long term planning, as
well as day to day operations.
 4. Conduct performance evaluations in accordance with property and company
guidelines, and maintain employee files.
 5. Properly utilize performance feedback, recognition, training, and adherence to
company policies, legal requirements.
 6. Maintain confidentiality of department affairs.
 7. Provide input into and execute strategic plan consistent with the annual
business/marketing plan as submitted to the Vice President of Hotel Services.
 8. Participate in the research, development, evaluation, and implementation of
new products, services, technology.
 9. Maintain the integrity of a property wide inspection program on a regular basis
 10. Maintain effective communications with all hotel operational departments to
effectively resolve situations impacting guest service or malfunctions of
departmental equipment

 Operate smooth, efficient, cost effective operation; including labor management,
supervision of all aspects of services and inventory control.
 Ensure projects are effectively implemented and meets department objectives
 Supervise department functions on a shift basis
 Ensure adherence to guest services standards within established departmental

 Provide a positive, empowering, and productive work environment through setting
an example and consistency of daily work habits and standards
 Maintain all departmental assets including equipment repairs and maintenance and
ensure all departmental areas (FOH and BOH) are maintained, clean, and organized

 Accept full responsibility for the department in the absence of the Shift Manager

creatively solve problems with the ability to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and

Houseman
Hotel housemen provide janitorial and
maintenance support to hotels and other such
facilities by ensuring that the premises are clean
and tidy at all times. They prepare rooms for
guests and ensure that auditoriums and meeting
rooms are well equipped and neat.
These professionals are also responsible for
cleaning lobbies and bathrooms along with
stocking guest rooms with necessary items like
soaps, tissues and towels.
Duties and Responsibilities of
Houseman
 Maintain and clean rooms, bathrooms and work areas
 Clean furnishings and carpets
 Clean and maintain common areas within the hotel
 Shovel snow from walkways
 Assist with bellman duties when required
 Reply guests’ questions and handle any concerns
 Assist front desk staff as an when required
 Replenish supplies in guest rooms
 Change bed linens and empty trash as required
 Assist housekeeping staff with laundry removal
