This case study discusses how healthcare professionals manage the emotions involved in their work. Three individuals - Louise, Lisa, and Anil - describe different strategies for dealing with the emotional toll of caring for patients, such as compartmentalizing emotions or allowing oneself to fully feel emotions after work. The discussion questions cover recognizing and regulating patient emotions, altering patient emotions through various means, and managing stress and distress on the job through self-care techniques and knowing one's limits.
What is it that moves a person to give up their time, money, and even safety to relieve another person's suffering? Compassion is the key. Human suffering is inevitable, but our ability to understand and sympathize with the plight and circumstances of other people can play a major role in whether we take action to relieve this suffering. Compassion is also a highly valued quality. Religions stress the importance of compassion, while people often list characteristics such as "kind" and "compassionate" as what they look for in a potential partner.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
A presentation on the benefits of mindfulness for Judges at the Orlando, 2016. As important as the medical, psychological and stress reducing aspect of mindfulness are, the ability to pay sustained, nonjudgmental attention in the courtroom - without the distortion of habit, bias, or assumptions - may lead a judge to treat people and manage a courtroom in a manner that encourages confidence in our system of justice.
“Human mind is like being filled with drunken monkeys, jumping around, screeching, chattering, carrying on endlessly. We all have monkey minds, with dozens of monkeys all clamoring for attention. Fear is an especially loud monkey, sounding the alarm incessantly, pointing out all the things we should be wary of and everything that could go wrong”.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Hello, this is team 3’s case presentation of Case Study 4.2: Riding the Emotional Roller Coaster. Our team is members are: _______.
Emotional Management is the focal point of our study. We’ll look at how people manage stress and the emotions that come along with high stress work environments. Finally we’ll talk about what causes stress, its effects, and how we can minimize high stress levels. The subjects of our case, are 3 healthcare professionals. 2 nurses: Louise Damiani, an oncology nurse with the CentraState Healthcare system, and Lisa Salvatore, a charge nurse at the Leon s. Peters Burn Center. Also, one military medic, Anil Shandil from the 328th Combat Support Hospital. We will discuss how they cope with the inherent stresses of their work, and the importance of doing so.
The healthcare industry, which follows the continuum of care from birth to death, creates a complex dichotomy of emotion and behavior for the medical professionals within it. In the case study we evaluated the application of managing emotions while displaying planned and controlled organizationally desired emotions on the job. Each of the three individuals featured in this case study are exposed to significant amount of intense emotional interaction and they each manage their emotions on the job in a unique way
Louise experiences the full range of emotions throughout her day. There is the highs of the good news of a cancer going in to remission, and the lows a patient with a grim prognosis. She chooses to ignore the emotions that will get in her way of taking care of her patients. Like many healthcare professionals, she puts the patients emotional needs ahead of her own. This puts her at high risk for displaying emotional dissonance.
Lisa must cope with the urgency and stress caused every time the ER receives a burn victim. And the sadness that comes along when she is treating children with burn injuries. She chooses to ignore her emotions throughout the day and releases all the raw emotion on her drive home. READ QUOTE This is a healthy release of stored up energy, but it would be important to ensure she encourages her family to recognize when she needs external help.
Anil copes with the urgency, sadness, and frustration of his job by turning his emotions off. As a military medic, Anil sees serious combat injuries and has to treat both friend and foe. READ QUOTES He also mentions compassion fatigue; an inconsistency in his beliefs, feelings, and behaviors. The main symptom is a decreasing ability to feel compassion for others. This is an unhealthy practice because over time it will lead to social disconnect and an inability to function as an emotionally stable member of society.
Emotional intelligence builds on the skillset of recognizing and regulating the emotions of not only yourself, but others. This ability, though innate, can be developed through experience associated with maturity, personal coaching and peer feedback.Working with patients of varying degrees of physical and mental health requires a high level of emotional labor. As patients are consumed with the stresses of life threatening inflictions and pain, healthcare professionals make great efforts to plan, control and display their emotions and behaviors
By controlling their own and their patient’s emotions, they can reduce patient stressors and positively affect a patient’s physiological responses to stress such as a decreased heart rate, controlled breathing, treatment responsiveness, and an increased cognitive awareness.
All of the case subjects face similar situations involving traumatic injury and illness. In the cases of Louise and Lisa, we observe the two higher dimensions of the emotional intelligence hierarchy.
A couple examples of how a patient’s emotions can be altered are READ LIST.
Stress is an adaptive response to a situation that is perceived as challenging or threatening to the person’s well-being. Also known as a ‘flight-or-fight’ response. All three of our medical subjects deal with high stress at their positions. Louise battles stress caused by her patients and her employer. Her patients often receive negative news regarding the extent of their cancer. The emotional extremes faced by her patients cause anxiety and create internal turmoil. A lack of situational control creates burdensome stresses. She also weathers the stresses caused by office politics. These stresses impact her personally and professionally. Lisa faces the stress of uncertainty. Within her burn trauma unit she encounters a gauntlet of physical maladies and wide array of burn victims. The urgency of treatment imposes the mental and physical ‘flight’ adaptations. These time constraints coupled with the extreme work load defines stress within trauma units. The visual images of injured children drag on her heart as she treats the young who are fragile and defenseless. Anil witnesses extreme injuries that require urgent decisions and actions. The desperate and agonizing emotions displayed by his patients create ‘flight’ urges that he must overcome. Anil also provides medical care of Iraqi detainees. Anil faces stresses caused by the conflicting emotions accompanying the task of caring for the ‘enemy.’
Distress causes unfavorable outcomes, such as anxiety, listlessness, drug and alcohol dependency and exhaustion. These symptoms run from psychological (hypertension and weight gain) and physiological (insomnia and depression) to behavioral (aggressive behavior), all negatively affecting the way each handles their job duties. In extreme cases, these errors may induce medical errorsThe eustress activates beneficial qualities necessary to overcome the adversities surrounding the urgency of patient care and attention and to motivate the will to succeed through extreme obstacles. The eustress properties are often necessary to overcome the emotional stresses created by the situation. The two stress characteristics combine harmonically
Many symptoms of distress include…
The distress associated with stress can be mitigated through voluntary activities. Proper amounts of sleep and physical activity can strengthen an individual’s emotional state, creating a stress buffer. Understanding the appropriate balance between work time and personal time creates a sense of purpose outside of one’s professional life, both in a relaxing and rejuvenating way. The medicinal value of a vacation is often overlooked by those in highly stressful jobs. Even a slight break for meditation can provide the stress relief needed for proper performance. . Each of the individuals studied in this case have developed coping mechanisms and may need extra help to ensure the integrity of their own wellbeing.
